I am missing the automatic update icon in the system tray telling you that updates are available for installation. When I go to Start > Shutdown there is an option to shutdown & install updates. Updates are set to download automatically, but let me choose whe to install.

Have you Shut down and let the updates install? If there are pending updates, I don't think it will show up until they are installed.

The icon only shows for an admin user.
If it fails to show even for an admin user, which is does from time to time then if you log off (not installing updates) and log on as an admin user it will usually appear and let you view the updates. If a log of/on fails then a re-boot should work.

I am an administrator on the machine & I have shut down & installed the updates on many occasions, but the icon never appears. This machine had updates blocked by a domain policy (my machine very rarely connect to the domain) & I was able to get it to its current state where the updates are downloaded.

Have you tried a manual visit to Windows Updates, that might resurrect the missing icon? While your there have a look for all the lesser "Recommended Updates" your missing out on by solely relying on the Automatic Updates, which only give you Security updates. Don't dabble in Driver or Hardware updates from Windows, always get them from the manufacturer.

Improvements in Updating

What about The Notification Area and Hiding inactive icons? Seems unlikely that such an important icon would be effected by that, but you might as well check it.

The Group Policy thing is a bit of a worry what do your setting say on that matter?

How to configure automatic updates by using Group Policy or registry settings

Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality (NUMBER 164)

Taskbar Repair Tool

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
