Minimum Resolution

I have read a few posts and ity seems people are still building for 800x600 resolution.

I was wondering why? I used to but I have talked to a few friends in some very well known multinational corporations and they have dropped that requirement and now build for 1024x800, as nearly all PCs ship with a minimum of 172 these days, and most home users would but at least that, especially if they are game players, and most busniesses buy 172 these days. Even laptops support 1024.

I was wondering wether its just a hang-over from a couple of years ago or wether there was a really good reason?

Hi,

The reason is 15 inch monitors and smaller. There are still alot of people who use and/or have them. Not sure what the percentages are but there are still quite of people that use 800*600 resolution, so webmasters must cater to them still. There will come a day when we only make sites for 1024*768 (can't wait).

Like what SPYDERIZ said, there are alot of people with 800*600 resolution out there (I have a 17" moniter but I still use 800*600 resolution)...
Building for that resolution is also good because orginazations like Public Libraries, School, Churchs that don't have enough money for better moniters still use older ones that only support 800*600 resolution... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

So I should not worry about 600X452? I've been re-making my site from scratch this last week and I was going to do 600 X 452 centered. Are there few enough users with that that I can do 800 X 600 centered?

Nope, 600*452 is extremelly ancient!! Noone on Earth (well maybe 1% or so) uses that...
Just code for 800*600 and 1024*800 resolution, nothing smaller and nothing higher... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

Hi,

The general push is towards 1024*768 and more and more people are conforming to that standard. I don't know anyone who uses 640*480, don't even bother. The thing to note is that you should either make the site fit 800*600 or use a table with the width="100%" so no matter what resolution, the page will always appear to fit the screen.

The only two resolution you should be concerned with is 800*600 and 1024*800, thas it... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

Here's 4 decent sources for Internet demographics that offer statistics on everything from monitor resolution to the percentage of users who have Javascript enabled and everything in between. One thing to keep in mind is the *type* of visitor you are targeting. Ogun's statistics for *his* site directly conflict with most stats you'll see for the general Internet population so my guess is he is targeting more specific visitors that use the higher resolutions. Gamers, graphics and design guys, hi-tech people, teenage boys, all probably use higher resolutions. But from the stats I have been able find, the general popluation is still favoring 800x600. Ultimately, you just need to inform yourself the best you can and then make a decision based on the type of visitors you are targeting. Might not be a bad idea to contact other Webmasters who have sites like the one you are designing for and politely ask them for their statistics on monitor resolution.
