I am having a problem when I import or Paste a digital picture into a Word file. The pics that I take are generally good quality and when I paste them, they are pretty large. I then shrink the pic with the hopes that the file size of the pic will go down. This does not occur.

Any help would be much appreciated.

hello!
What you need to do is use a picture/image editor, such as Adobe Photoshop/Microsoft Picture Editor/JASC Paint Shop Pro, to reduce the image size...this is done through the menus at the top of the software screen, usually under the "Edit" menu...
Once you have resized the image you can then save it again (I usually change the name so that I can save my origional image)...
This new, reduced file size, image is the one you will need to insert into your word doc!

As Boni says shrink then paste. Take a look at xat its great for reducing the size (both meanings) of an image.

Just to add a bit more the reason that Word or Powerpoint files become large is that when you copy and paste an image it gets converted to a BMP file (gives big file size). Cutting and pasting large images doesn't help either (also big file size).

As has already been said use image app to reduce the size (somewhere near the final size you want would be good) also you can reduce the resolution (100dpi) and you'll not notice the difference. Save the image as either jpeg or gif and use the insert image option in Word/Powerpoint.

I've tweaked users files before now where the images that have been pasted into a Powerpoint slide were full A4 size and reduced in PP. As you have found this has no infuence on the file size. Once had a PP file that was 92meg for 15 slides! After optimising it was 900k

I had good luck by pasting them into Paint (on Start, Programs, Accessories) and then saving as JPG. I then import them into Word using Insert, Picture, from File.

Hi pud,

Another approach would be to insert links to the images, rather than the images themselves. That way, Word need only ever hold the links. This is good if you're not going to send the Word document to someone else, or move the images to another folder (where Word won't be looking for them). It's also good if there's a possibility that the images will be edited/updated and you want then changes to be reflected in the Word document without having to re-insert them.

Cheers
PS: Linking doesn't speed up the use of the Word file - if you've got hi-res images, Word will still take some time to render them.

Wow, I wish some of my co-workers were this responsive. Thank you all for your responses.

I've choosen the open in pic editor, resize, save, import to word/PP. Big difference, thanks.
