Migration to Windows 2003 1

Hi all!

I Just got a job with a new company and have been put in charge of a migration to 2003. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with where to start, and was wondering if anyone had any pointers on good resources to use when in the planning stages.

How big is the migration? What are you migrating from? How many users? What knowledge do you have of Windows 2003? Have you migrated servers before?
These are the sort of questions I would ask myself before I got cracking. If it's a small migration job (on a small network with not too many users), you should come out smiling as there are so many resources available to help. But if the setup is really complex and large, you would have to really plan more carefully.

I know that's not the most helpful bumpf in the world, but hey.... good luck! ;-)

Heheh, no i did not blag my way into this job. I already have some migration experience, but that was over 2 years ago now and to 2000 from NT. I have my MCSE 2003 but not much practical experience in 2003 apart from setting up a few servers and such. My real experience it with 2000. Oh well, plan plan plan, here goes...

Pay particular attention if you are utilizing any SQL Server applications. There are a few nuances to SQL Server, particularly older versions running on W2K3, such as SQL Server 7 not being "supported" on the platform. Also I would focus on learning W2K3 Active Directory if you're using AD now, because there are some changes there as well. If you're pressed for time, start focusing there, and you'll probably learn a good bit more in the process. All in all, you'll find yourself happier on 2K3
