I will to copy the users from one solaris 7 to another. The hardware config is different so I am reluctant to use ufsdump. I will tar my user directories to tape so that I can recreate the user directories ,but how to I copy the user login information across to the other server.

can I just copy the
/etc/group
/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow

please help

You can ftp the /etc/passwd file over, which will create the user names and allocate home directories, shells etc.
You must then run pwconv to populate the /etc/shadow file. However this will result in every password being lost, therefore you must reset the root password immediately (before any reboot).

Then you will have to reset each password manually, either as a block, or as and when someone complains. I personally wait until someone complains because you can find out which users are no longer required.

If you use ftp to transfer the file passwd or group, verify the permissions before reboot!

I have successfully migrated the passwd shadow and group files on Solaris 6 & 8 with no issues.

I have also successfully migrated the passwd, shadow and group files from a Solaris 7 to a Solaris 9 system. Much better than having all the users have to reset their passwords!
