does anyone have any views on the relative merits of migrating to Cognos 8.

I'm starting to see migration issues and bugs that seem like more pain that the migration would be worth.

Would I be better off waiting for a few more releases to fix the bugs / issues or is it worth the going through the pain barrier now...?

I've done three upgrades and had no major issues. I tried a number of methods including letting cognos configuration do the work and also creating a new Content Store in C8 and then importing a saved package.

If fishing was easy it would be called catching

I'm sorry but Cognos installation on Linux server doesn't provide the "Active Directory" type of namespace.
It provides LDAP and Custom Java provider only.

Bye

Thanks for your reply - sounds encouraging..!

Did you have any specific problems with migrating existing reports or did they all work..?

Mine work great. Imported 3 existing packages, 1 existing cube, and created a new package from scratch just to see if any extra functions were missing in the imported ones. I had issues with the virus protection and .exe, but that is ok now since adjusted on the virus protection side.(mcAfee). Creating reports and running fine. Like it.

there are many issues with the migration utilities...

you probably will not run into issues with migrating your catalogs, but may run into issues with a few reports.

overall the migration utilities are not bad... not cognos's greatest strength, but not bad.

I spoke to quite a few Cognos people on Thursday at the Cognos 8 roadshow. I expected a generally positive response when asking about issues but i got the feeling that migrating from ReportNet to Cognos 8 is generally trouble free. Problems arise if you have any hardcoded SQL in reports or in the frameworks. theres also been one maintenance release which has solved most of the early bugs..

Decision made for us I think - we probably going to migrate everything now...

Thanks everyone for the input..

Geoff

Hi ,
I have attned Cognos User Group meeting in Toronto downtown and as suggested simple reports can be migrated but not complex reports. I did migration one year back from impromptu to ReportNet 1.1 MR1 and that was partially successful.
