Here's the situation: I need to migrate our primary windows 2000 file server environment to a 2003 cluster. I need this to be as transparent as possible to the end users.
Here are the steps I think I need to take - am I missing something?

Transfer data to cluster server.
Shutdown old file server.
Update DNS and WINS to repoint old server name to the cluster server IP.
Rename the cluster in cluster administrator to reflect the old file server name.
reboot cluster for good measure.

One other question - is there any way i can create an alias in DNS (cname?) and WINS so that the cluster server can also be reached via it's old cluster name?

To rename the network name resource, you may need to remove the old server from AD and let it replicate, you might get a conflict trying to bring the resource online.

You sure can create aliases in DNS, just not Wins. For DNS just create a new alias, and point it to the FQDN of the cluster DNS record. Wins you'll have to either hope the old records change for you, or delete them and hope they get re-added with that reboot, or add them as static.
