Migrating NTFS permissions

I plan to move some data from one server to another and I wish to preserve the NTFS permissions. I gather there is a way to export the security settings from the current server, to a security template, then import them to the new server. Can anyone explain how to do this?

I know Veritas can backup and restore permissions and I "think" robocopy will do the job also.

Veritas does do it, in a manner of speaking. However, when I tried it it displayed the correct permissions but they were not effective.

I've been studying the for 2003 infrastructure (70-291) exam and it says that NTFS permissions can be exported to a security template, then imported via the security configuration and analysis MMC snap in. It seems to me, however, that when creating the template, you add the folders to be analysed and configured and, rather than pick up the permissions as they are currently set, it expects you to set them manually. This defeats the object of the exercise as I could set them manually on the new server.

In short, I need it to automatically extract the NTFS permissions and save them in a security template, to be imported into a new server.

Why wouldn't you just use robocopy with the /SEC switch?

That will copy the files along with their permissions quite happily.
