Hi!

I would need to migrate an AiX from a single CPU box to an SMP one ( B50 -> B80 ). Both machines have the same type HotPlug hard disc bays. Is there a correct method to move my discs into the new server?

Both kernel ( bos.up and bos.mp ) are installed. My theory is that I change the boot image using bosboot:

bosboot -a -d hdisk1 -k /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp

then power off B50 box, put hdisk1 into the B80, and finally select it as boot device in the SMS menu.

Might that be such simple, or I will find some caveats?

Thankfully,

I would not expect that moving the rootvg disks would work without problems.

Do you already have an AIX 5.2 running on the B80? If so then you could check what device drivers have been installed on it (lslpp -L "devices.*") and make sure the same are installed on the B50. Then take a mksysb (tape, CD, DVD-RAM, NIM) of the B50 and use that for reinstalling the B80. If you have a NIM server then this would be straightforward and you would not need to check installed drivers on the source machine as NIM handles this automatically.
