Migrate SBS to new hardware

I am planning to replace our old server with a new one and will be following the MS guide:

The plan is to migrate it over 5 days, but I'm unsure whether services will still be available during this time.

Will everything still run under the existing sbs until the last step and the old server is removed from the network?

I would do one of two things:

1. Follow the instructions here

http://www.swingmigration.com

or

2. Purchase imaging softwar such as StorageCraft, Acronis, etc. Boot the CD and 'cold image' the server. Then do a Hardware Independent Restore to the new server. You'll fight some driver issues but nothing you can't get around quickly.

I;ve done both and they both work well. Either way there is NO way you should need 5 days to migrate. You could easily do this over a weekend. Depending on the amount of data you have, the devices you use and the imaging technology you use option 2 could be done in 4 or 5 hours.

I would second using StorageCraft's ShadowProtect. It makes the process SOOOO SIMPLE.

I had to re-image a server that had a 300GB C drive that was filled with shared files. The restore process only took 45 minutes.
