I have two boxes, 1) old box with SBS 2000 installed 2) new box with SBS 2003 installed. I need to migrate the AD database from the SBS2000 box to the SBS2003 box.

Will I need to place both boxes in the same network?

I cannot seem to find documentation to complete this process. Please help.

Thanks,

Stephen

You can do a swing migration of the AD from one server to another if you are willing to rerun setup on the new server. I've done this several times and find it the best way to go about what you are trying to do.

If you follow the "swing" plan, you won't place them in the same network, but you will build a third "wagon" server that will allow you to migrate that data over to the new server. Your two servers will have the same name, and you will take the old one offline when you bring the new one online. The nice thing about this solution is that this is transparent to the workstations, so you don't have to mess with profiles or mapped drives at all.

I like this solution. So far what I have is the old box which is currently serving the network and the new box with SBS 2003 installed and configured.

Both servers are the same with the exception of the server name. The new box is different.

Please send me documentation for this Swing process.

Thanks,

Stephen

There's a technician's kit you can buy for $200 at that comes with support from Jeff Middleton, the guy who put together all the scripts and documentation. That's what I've done in the past. The documentation is very complete and ultimately very educational, and will save you quite a bit of time and headache.

There is a little bit of documentation at Microsoft for doing something like a swing migration, but nothing compares to what Jeff Middleton's done.

By the way, the extra "server" could be a workstation temporarily used for the project, or even a virtual machine running on VMWare or Virtual Server. I've done it virtually once myself without issues.
