Hello and thanks in advance:

I am trying to migrate my entire data (OS included) from an old PC (Win 98SE) to a brand new Laptop.

I cannot do it the old way because I have too many applications and I have lost many of the serial numbers.

I thought about buying some software like "Ghost" and move the entire content of the old HD to the new one.

I can buy a laptop without an operating system. Would that work?

I believe you can image the desktop hard drive to the laptop hard drive, but you may need to take it somewhere local because you will need an adapter to put the laptop hdd into the desktop for imaging, unles you use Ghost which will copy across the network, then I believe this article will help you adapt it to your laptop after you get the image on to it.

I think it would be foolish to install win98 on a new computer. Try using Alohabob PC relocator. It will allow you to migrate the applications and data to the new OS (XP). It's not the most reliable, but if you don't have the old software it may be your best alternative.

There's no reason why you can't try ghosting an image onto this new laptop. However, you will need to have available all the correct Windows 98 drivers for the new laptop hardware like mousepad, video, sound, modem, ethernet adaptor, etc., etc. The installation will also doubtless ask for the Windows 98 CD, so make sure the CD drive can be made to work at the DOS level BEFORE you boot for the first time into Windows.

All you'll have to lose by trying this, is a lot of time and effort. But maybe you deem this worthwhile...

Good luck!

Thanks Guys,

I though about something else. I could upgrade my old desktop PC (which has served me so well...and still does...) to a more powerful and new hardware, upgrade the OS to XP (which I am hesitant to do because I like win 98SE so much more...) then I can try to ghost it and keep the Desktop as a backup computer.

It should work just fine.

I'll let you know how it goes...thank you all.

Best Regards

P.S.: Please let me know if you have any comment of that.

Some things to consider:

1) Windows 98 is all but obsolete. Microsoft will stop supporting it this summer. Many new applications will not even run on it. Security is poor compared to XP. Even XP will be replaced next year with Vista.

2) Upgrading your old pc will probably require so much (new motherboard and processor, more memory, new drives, new power supply, XP software) that it would be cheaper to buy a new one.

It's just a bad idea to ghost Win98 to a new machine. Save your data, and get new software. There may be a few apps that you would have to reinstall if you still need them, but you will be happier in the long run.

I've redone two old 98 systems last week, both running DOS apps primarily. One of them hasn't been updated since 1986!
We had to reinstall 98 so that both would run. In both cases, the client doesn't want to pay for an upgrade to their apps!
