I have a Windows 2000 Server SP4.

It functions as the PDC, Active Directory and Exchange Server

I need to migrate the Active Directory & PDC role to a vanilla Server, which I will give the same hostname and IP address.

What is the best way to approach this?

Thanks

The easiest way is if you have another server, join it to the domain and then run dcpromo. This will promote it to a domain controller. I would use a different name and ip address for this new domain controller.

Is there a reason you want to use the same name and ip address of your existing domain controller?

The reason I need to keep the same name is that I run Exchange 2000 on the same Server, I know thats a seperate thread.

How can I install Active directory on the new Server?

Thanks

Seems to me the best way is to follow what jfwebber suggested and join it to the existing domain and promote it to a DC. Then install Exchange and start moving mailboxes onto the new machine.

To Install the Active Directory, you need first to configure
the TCP/IP properties of the server with a static ip address .Join it to the domain and rnn the dcpromo.
By the way, how many dcs do you have on the network.and how have you configured your dns.Important catch is when you run the dcpromo, it will be looking for dns so bear that in mind

Thanks.

I have two DC's and DNS runs on a seperate server.
