I'm not worried about losing programming so I was gonna pull the motherboard and short the capacitor but I seem to vaguely remember another old trick that I haven't tried in ages and I was thinking it might work for this application.

Isn't it also possible to just power down, power back up after 15 to 30 seconds or so, run startup and then pull the plug just as it begins applying the template, swap the old NVRAM pack and 4.1 cartridge for the new ones, power back up and run startup?

Its do startup, pull power when it says appling template then install new software and do another startup.
Also make sure NVram cartridge is rel 2 and if its a NAM for vm must be 4.1 and done first

So if I use this procedure, it's actually not necessary to short the capacitor on the mother board, right?
