MICS CO trunk problem

I am dealing with a Nortel Meridian system for a church.

Line 1 rings 4 times and goes to an auto message. (I don't know if it's a voicemail or auto attendant).
Lines 4 and 5 are dead. We tried replacing the DS card with a CI card, but a buddy of mine said that the CI card was newer than what the MICS system could handle. I talked to the retailer from whom the CI card was purchased and they said you have to wait an additional 5 minutes after the phones come up till the trunks will work.

The whole point is we think the current DS card is bad. But i can't explain why Line 1 is going to a message. The line appearance is set for appear and ring on the extension i was at, but when you call in on the line, it doesn't register on the extension.

HELP!!!

Almost confusing
So it sounds like you are trying to say you have 2 issues.

Are you saying I replaced the DS card with a CI card but same issue with lines 4 and 5?
You are not clear if the CI card worked or not.

"the current DS card is bad"
Well line 4 is on one card/slot and line 5 is on the other card/slot so do you mean you suspect both cards as being bad?
If you have 5 lines or more then to troubleshoot you would swap the 2 cards.
After swapping and same issue then its is not a card issue, either the carrier (did you check before KSU?) or the ports on the KSU are gone.
Or after swapping and now lines 1 and 8(move dialtone to port 8 to test) are dead then you have card issues

You also need to check how and what order the lines are terminated to the KSU to verify what line numbers in programming you need to deal with.
If a line is programmed to a set but does not ring then you programmed the wrong line number it sounds like.

"I don't know if it's a voicemail or auto attendant"
-Mailbox - greeting with a beep so you can leave a message
-AA is the main greeting with no message option.

"But i can't explain why Line 1 is going to a message"
It is normal for a line to be answered by one or the other.
Companies require callers to leave messages if unanswered or a main greeting with options and info etc.

When we swapped out the DS card for the CI card, the lines came up as 'Not In Service'. I was told later in the day that we would have to wait an additional 5 minutes for the CI card to finish booting after the phones came up. I'm trying to confirm if this is correct.

With regards to line 1, I understand your statement about companies requiring answering if RNA occurs. What puzzles me is how the line can be programmed on a set as appear and ring, yet when you call in to that line, it does neither.

This whole project started out as my boss telling the customer that the CO card was bad and would need to be replaced to fix the lines not working issue. We verified dialtone comping from the provider. I will check the port situation by moving the cross connects around.

Once the sets come up after a reboot the lines then start to kick in, only a couple minutes.

"What puzzles me is how the line can be programmed on a set as appear and ring, yet when you call in to that line, it does neither."
Your first post states twice that you get AA or mailbox, now its neither?

Does it have dial tone when you press the line?
When you do Feature * 0 Line 1 does it state Line 001?

Sorry for the confusion.

The line is set to appear and ring. So it should show up on the phone when you call in. The number rings 4 times and goes to a voice recording. But you never see the call on the extension itself no matter what extension you look at. The indicator never comes on to show that a call is coming through on that line. I can make outbound calls on the line. But i can't see any inbound calls.

Ok check to see if its the clients voicemail system on site or that of the carriers (call answer).
While listening to the greeting press *2XX (i.e. 221 reception) and see if it work, if it does not you maybe listening to the line carriers mailbox.

As for the ring you can try to answer it anyway by pressing the line, if it works then you do not have enough voltage from the carrier to make it ring or flash or a bad port on the card.
If it does not work then maybe the line is forwarded to another line somewhere, press *73 on the line to cancel and forwarding and test again.

It turned out to be a bad card after all. We switched out the first 2 DS cards in the Meridian Box and everything popped back up as it should have.

Thanks for the info. I will make note of it for future reference.

Did you mean 2 cards were bad?

Yes. We obtained a secondary DS card and replaced both cards in the main box.
