MICS 4.1 upgrade

I have a used MICS 4.1 I want to upgrade to 7.1. I dont care about retaining the programing do I still need the upgrade tool or can I just insert the new NVRAM card and software and reboot?

Power down, power up, do a start-up, when the MICS starts to restart, power down, insert 7.1 and power up.
