Microsoft Word Formatting - formats whole document 2

I have come across this before but can't remember the way to fix it.
In Word 2000 and XP it has happened to me. When I apply any formatting (centre, bold, and bullets), the formatting will apply to the entire document. If I then hit undo, it takes it away apart from the bit that I want formatting.

A similar thing occurs with numbering. If I format bullets and numbering, then customize, then modify to start at (eg) 5, it will number something like 36 onwards. I then hit undo and it does what i originally asked of it.

If I remember rightly it had something to do with styles in the normal template, but I can't recall.

You've checked the 'Automatically Update Style' button. Check Format, Style and clear the check box.
