Dear Sirs,

I a using Microsoft Word 97. When I open a file, a dialog box pops up that reads:

C:\...\xyzfile.doc is being used by joe smith. Do you want to make a copy?

*xyzfile.doc has been used as an example

**joe smith is a fictious name used as an example.

This seems to have happened when word files from one computer were backed up and moved to another. Regardless of whether a copy is made or not it always does the same thing when a Microsoft Word 97 file is opened. Any suggestions of how to make this go away?? And does anyone know why it is doing this?

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the information you referenced. But it doesn't apply to this situation. The articles referenced are basically about WORD saving temp documents when the computer is abruplty turned off or interrupted. The situation I am dealing with is that the files seem to have been saved by another user, hence when they are opened they are showing being used by another person. Thanks again

Delete the owner file.

The owner file is located in the same folder as the document that you tried to open. The owner file name uses the following convention: It begins with a tilde (~), followed by a dollar sign ($), followed by the remainder of the document file name. The file name extension is .doc. For example, the owner file for Document.doc is named ~$cument.doc.

Start Word. If Word asks you whether you want to load the changes that were made to the Global or Normal template, click No.
Open your document.

MORE INFORMATION
Word creates an owner file when you open a previously saved Word document. An owner file is temporary and holds the logon name of the person who opens the document.

Dear Sir,

I appreciate your continued help on this problem. There is not a file in the folder other than the document. Could it be somewhere else?? The file folder where the document is stored it dispaly all files, hidden or otherwise. Please let me know if this helps...

Thanks,

michbar in group 68 suggested the fix to this as follows:

This is a known bug with Word 97. It was fixed in Word 97 SR2. You can download Word 97 SR2 from Microsoft.

Microsoft KB article 174304
I downloaded the patch, guess what?!? IT WORKED!

THANK YOU michbar and rest...............
