I happened to start Word one day and it just hung with no error message. I thought it was just a fluke so I rebooted my PC and it still did the same thing. I tried to "kill" the program by doing an "End Task" and it tells me my PC is low on resources. Everything else in the office suite works fine. Excel opens up without a hitch. I went ahead and uninstalled the entire suite and did a reinstall, but it still didn't work. I killed almost all memory resident progs such as my virus scanner, but that didn't help. I keep getting that error msg about the low system resources. I have a PIII-900 with 256MB RAM running Windows 98.

I'd try uninstalling it and then remove the office directory and any mention of it in the registry (make sure you back up the registry first though). Then reboot and reinstall it. It looks like it is probably a dll or something that is causing the issue - it is probably not removed as part of the standard uninstall.

Lilcam - With Word NOT running, search for and then delete all instances of the file Normal.dot - If none are found, set Windows Explorer to display hidden files. Start Word - it will create a new normal.dot and recreate any Word customizations for new files(default font, font size, justification, etc.) - Gibber

Renaming normal.dot to normal.old did the trick
