Hi all:

I am having a hell of a time trying to get the page numbers correct for a book I am writing. This has been discussed before but I need some specific step-by-step instructions to help me out. In the first part of the book I don't want any pages at all. In the second part of the book I want lower case roman numerals (TOC, acknowledgements, dedication, forward), And then in the main body of the book I want regular numbers.

So far, everything I have tried has really messed up the numbering. I've tried dividing the document up into sections but that did work because the page numbers wouldn't carry over to the next page at all. This is driving me nuts. PLEASE HELP!

You need sections. You can continue numbing across sections.

I certainly agree that page numbering is numbing <grin>.

However, JP is quite correct, you have to use Sections. Sorry, but that is the way Word works. I am positive that you can do whatever it is you want to do, but it will take patience.

You will also have to clearly describe things. You want no page numbering in the first "part". Ok, that can be done. Then, you mention a TOC. You have the TOC in the middle of the book?

Bottom line though is that page numbering is a property of Sections.

Yes please describe EXACTLY what you want.

How large is the first section that you don't want numbered.

In the middle section that you want to number with lower Roman numerals (?), are the TOC pages being numbered too.

In the last (body) section, do you want it to start at page 1?

What do you want the TOC to display, just for the final part starting at Page 1, the final and middle sections using different numbers?

All can be done.

Maybe these would help:

I think I got it figured out now. But it was really driving me nuts before. the first section was only one page (front and back - 2 pages in word). Thanks for the help though!

hi

there is a way to can insert page number in you file

Insert > Page Numbers. where you have to select position and alignment. there is only one way. if you want other requirement then please explain.

Huh? "the first section was only one page (front and back - 2 pages in word). "

How can it be one page...if it is two pages, front and back. That sounds like two pages. The section has two pages.
