We recently installed a new virtual server to run our sql standard 2008 sp2 server. So naturally what any it guy do is to take a backup of the virtual server. First night we tried to take a backup of our virtual hard disk the backup failed. So naturally we thought that it was Symantec’s fault. We have a Symantec hyper-v license purchased. So we contacted Symantec support and it came up that SqlServerWriter was the cause the backup failed. So we tried to take a full backup of virtual server white Windows server backup. And again the SqlServerWriter was the cause the backup failed. So the very big question is that what setting do I have to put on my server that I am cable of doing nightly backup of my virtual server what is running sql standard server 2008, white out shutting the virtual server down.

Under here is some specs of our work environment:

Operating System= Windows Server 2008 R2

Virtual Server Software = Hyper-V Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Program = SQL 2008 sp2 Standard

Backup Software = Symantec Exec 2010

And this is the errors what we are getting in the events viewer:

Sqllib error: OLEDB Error encountered calling ICommandText::Execute. hr = 0x80040e14. SQLSTATE: 42000, Native Error: 3013

Solution what we have tried is:

Registering

Run FIXVSS.BAT to reset VSS configuration.
rem FILENAME: FIXVSS03.BAT
rem
net stop "System Event Notification"
net stop "COM+ Event System"
net stop "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider "
net stop "Volume Shadow Copy"
cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll

doesn't work

Sow my big question is how do i get my backup's again to work?

Sorry if i posted this on the wrong section on the forum. and if anybody needs more information i haven't provided i am happy to give more.

Unless you absolutely need brick-level restore capability in your database then I would set the backup to exclude the database files (DBF, LDF, etc). What many people do with SQL is to set up a maintenance plan or other scheduled job that backs up the SQL DBs from within SQL and dumps them to flat files. Then when they do their nightly backups (using Symantec or whatever) they back up those flat files instead of backing up the actual live database files, which are typically locked by SQL.

If you need more help you might want to try a SQL-specific forum.

What I'm reading from the logs is that the SQL VSS writer isn't able to write back to the host backup agent process for some reason.

Given that you are using a supported backup client, and a supported config (best that I can see) a call to Microsoft PSS is probably in store. Sounds like there is either some incompatibility between the agent and the version of SQL Server you are running, or a bug somewhere. Microsoft and Symantec will probably need to get on the phone together to get this sorted out.

kmcferrin we have already sql nightly scheduled backups of the databases, but it in my case i want a full backup of a virtual hard disk that are running the same time we are taking a backup of it. and we don't want to close the virtual server down to take a backup of it even that it's happening very fast. And if i have understood kmcferrin right that live databases files are locked and needs to be shutdown before you can take a backup of the databases files becuse when they are running they are locked.
