Microsoft SQL Agent on Linux Server? 2

Hi All,

I have recently set up an ArcServe installation that backs up primarily to a Dell 132T tape library on LTO3 tapes. The system is running ArcServe r11.5 on Linux (Centos 4.3).

The Windows filesystem agents work fine, however I purchased a Microsoft SQL backup agent for one of the MSSQL servers on the network and for some reason, it simply won't show up in the management software.

Have I made a mistake in thinking that the MSSQL Agent would work with the Linux Backup Server?

If it should work, what should I be looking at to get this problem resolved? There is a firewall on each Windows client server, however I have opened up the necessary ports for the filesystem agent as well as Port 6070 (UDP and TCP) for the MSSQL Agent.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Linux will not backup SQL using the SQL agent on Wintel servers.

That's most dissapointing - I spent a lot of time trying to find any documented evidence as to whether or not this was the case. Since I couldn't find anything either way, I was under the impression that the agents were universal and would work.

Has anyone ever come across any documentation from CA that confirms this?

I got tired of using the Agent in previous versions (and paying for it). I just do SQL backups and use ARCserve to back that up (with no agent). I xcopy the transaction log backups too in case the server dies before I get a the FULL db backups.

I would get a refund on the agent!

Thanks peeky1323 - if I had realised how easy it is to do MSSQL backups without the MSSQL agent, I wouldn't have bothered with paying for it.

Looks like I'll have to try for a refund...

I couldn`t agree more with vschumpy, prior to purchasing any module please make sure that your proposed setup is supported and supportconnect.ca.com is your place to look up.
This is true for all CA or not CA Products- always look up the compatibility matrix.

Carlos Alberto.
