We have a server running Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 that keeps on rebooting itself from time to time with the following message.

*** STOP: 0x00000050, (0xA22B3DE0,0x00000000,0xA0115C4C,0x00000001)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

*** Address A01154C4 base at A0000000, Datestamp 3aa010b4 - win32k.sys
Beginning dump of physical memory

Can anyone translate this as to whether we have a memory error, drive error, software error etc ?

Thanks

Page faults are generally two things:

-Memory
-Swap File (Hard Disk)

Unfortunatly, both take time to test. For the memory, I used a small software called MemTest86. (Search the web for it). It's written in Linux and you boot the diskette with it and it will test your memory in all the possible modes your memory supports. I've solved many memory issues with this software.

For the hard disk, running a surface scan is usually the best thing, but you need tools to do this and depending on your hardware (RAID, IDE, SCSI... ) certain tools are available and some aren't. If you have any RAID or fault-tolerant modes enabled, then most likely your problem is memory based since RAID have built-in hardware to avoid bad sectors and such, which would be the main cause in swap errors.

This never rules out that you may have an incompatibility issue too. Servers should never been taken for granted. You should have some good hardware running your OS. Like a name brand server that is certified and on the Microsoft Hardware Compatiblity List.

sorry--not very helpful but heres the official Microsoft step by step troubleshooting for this STOP error.

Stop Error 0x00000050
Stop error number:

(0x00000050)

Descriptive text:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Usual cause:

Memory error (data cannot be swapped out to disk using the paging file).

To troubleshoot Stop error 0x00000050
Remove any newly installed hardware (RAM, adapters, hard disks, modems, and so on).
Run any system diagnostics supplied by your computer manufacturer, especially the memory check.
Verify that any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, contact your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows 2000 updates or drivers you might need.
If the computer is formatted with NTFS, restart your computer, and then run Chkdsk /f /r on the system partition. If you cannot start the system due to the error, use the Command Console and run Chkdsk /r.
Disable or uninstall any antivirus programs.
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
