Hi,
Please correct me if i am wrong, is it possible to run a application that is installed on a local computer thats connected to the server over the internet through VPN?

Many Thanks
Tom Sanders

What does your question have to do with SharePoint and SBS? For future reference, when you ask a question, the details actually matter.

Which application? Is the local computer in a domain managed by an SBS server? Is the "local" computer local to you, or to the server?

Remote Web Workplace would allow you to remotely connect to a computer in the office and run applications on that system accessing the server...

Hi,

The sisuation is at the Location 1 i have a server with SBS on it and a local computer connected to the server with one domain.

At location 2 i want to dial in through VPN to access 2 programs and they are: DM Network Viewer ( For Cameras ) and Prism ( Tills and Stock Program ).

I really would not want to use RD.

Many Thanks and i hope this is enough information.

Well, your VPN is to the server, not to the workstation. And all the VPN does is let you access resources that are in shares on the server and sometimes run programs that access databases on the server. If the programs you want to run are installed on the workstation, the only thing you can do is use some sort of remote control tool like VNC, RDP, RWW, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply,

So if the program Prism got its inforamtion from a folder that is located on the server, i could then share it and at the other location i could VPN into it and install the same program, and then ask it to get the folder from the server over VPN?

I hope you can make sence of that

Hi,

Thanks that has answered the question i wanted, also how can you surf the net whilst connected to a VPN?

Many Thanks

Tom Sanders

There's usually an option in the VPN setup that allows you to decide whether or not you "use the remote default gateway" while connected or not. Depending on the setup of the VPN server, you may want to have that option turned off. Usually your ability to access the internet will hinge on that setting. If you can't access the internet over the VPN, try changing it.

To find the setting in XP, go into the properties of the VPN. Go to the Networking Tab. Get properties on TCP/IP. From there go into the Advanced settings. You will see the General Tab next. On that tab is the option you will manipulate.
