I am having problems with my Office xp and microsoft outlook refuses to open ,so i decided to uninstall office and reinstall it.Now my question is.. does anyone know the names of the files that contains my contacts's list and my emails so i can save them before uninstalling office!Since i am not able to open microsoft outlook, obviously i am unable to export these infos like i would normally do before uninstalling outlook.
thank you for your help! Angel[ponder]

Your emails should be stored in:

Documents and Settings\Your user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\A very long Hex string\Microsoft\Outlook Express

your address book should be stored in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

NB Depending on how you set your machine up Your user name may be Administrator or something else, but you should be able to work it out when you get into documents and settings.

I think some of the folders and files may be hidden, so you will need to ensure that you can see hidden folders/files:

In Windows Explorer use Tools | Folder Options, select the View tab and scroll down to select 'Show hidden files and folders', also uncheck (if necessary) hide extensions for known file types.

This presumes you are using Outlook Express, hope it helps.

I forgot to mention, when you have reinstalled, OE will create new files/folders. It is safe to copy your backups over them. I'm not sure, but I don't think that you can copy your accounts in the same way. I think you will have to recreate them, at least that's what I've always done.

If it's actually Outlook that you are having a problem with, and you plan to uninstall anyway, then try finding and deleting the file outlook.cmd before you do and see if it will fire up then.

You can have Windows do the work:

Start>Search for Files and Folders> *.pst

The file may be rather large, depending on your OL "Personal Folders" content, because it includes mails, contacts etc.

In case you have more than 1 mail account export them,

Tools>Accounts>Export

to a *.iaf file.

You may have to create the first account manually but from there you'll be able to import the rest.

I currently don't have XP installed, all menu names are Win2k and some of them have changed in XP.
