Hello All,

I have a friends computer and ms word or any other office program will not let him save a document. When you hit save or save as nothing happens. Its Office Pro 2003 running on XP. Here is what I did.

1. De-fragmented hard drive
2. Cleaned all temp internet files
3. Checked for spyware/viruses "clean"
4. Selected "check and repair" option in ms word
5. Attempted to uninstall/reinstall but get the error that says certain path does not exist, please contact vendor

Please help....

In your point 5 can you remember the exact error message?

Talking of errors, is there anything mentioned in the Event Viewer?

Have you tried the Office Programs via Safe Mode, or from Normal Mode while logged on with a different user?

Does the Save As routine work for other programs such as Notepad?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Linney,

1. The exact message is "This patch package could not be opened. Verify the patch package exists and that you can access it or contact the vendor to verify that this is a valind windows installed patch package"

2. Nothing showing in relation in event viewer

3. I will try word in safe mode now

4. Save and Save as work in notepad

5. No luck with system restore or chkdsk

Actually none of the programs will uninstall, same error message for each.

Do you think the repair install will do the trick? Thanks in advance...

Ok here's an update. Under administrator ms office saves files fine in safe mode. When I switch to the users main name under safe mode it does not save the files. Whats my next step?

See if you can get the Built-In Administrator to run in Normal Mode without problems. It is relatively easy if you are not automatically logging on to your normal user. You just press ctrl+alt+delete (twice) at the Welcome Screen where you normally logon. You will be able to type into the resulting Classic Login box. If you auto logon then you will have to turn off automatically logins to get the prompt. Sounds like you are going to have to create a new user anyway as your original is probably running a corrupted profile. See this article about copying profiles.
