Hi,
This is my first Posting.Hope I'm doing it right! For the past month we've been getting the following Microsoft Error Window (See below) 2 or 3 times during an Internet Explorer session while searching for Free Software downloads etc...Can anyone tell me if this can be fixed and how? Thanks.

Van

Message reads as follows:
Microsoft Internet Explorer as encountered a problem and needs to close etc...

Pls tell Microsoft about this problem
ends by offering two clickable boxes....SEND ERROR REPORT or DON'T SEND

Is there something in the Registry that we can disable,in order to stop this annoying nonsense?

In order to stop "this annoying nonsense as you call it, you need to get to the bottom of what is CAUSING the issue.

What version of Internet Explorer are you running? An update, if available, might solve it.

Disable any Explorer add-ons in case they are confusing things.

Is the machine clean of viruses, malware etc? What checks have you run?

Sure, you may be able to stop the message appearing by altering Registry entries, but this is like putting in a bigger fuse because the normal sized one keeps unexpectedly blowing... By doing that you're not fixing what is wrong.

I've generally come to the conclusion that it relates to the web page content and the inability of whatever version of IE I'm using to properly handle that content.

It is/was bad at 5, somewhat better at 5.5, and still happens at 6 for me.

You might try an alternative browser.

ROGER - G0AOZ,

Of course it's Windows 98se.I did'nt indicate it because I posed this query in the Windows 95/98 Forum.Sorry for the oversight.

I did'nt add any that I'm aware of!How do I check this out?

I run Avast anti virus regularly, and have a Firewall also.

I know tinkering with Registry may not the best solution, but hey, I'm desperate. Can you help furher,Thanks.

Ed Fair,
Thanks for the advice,we may just do that if all else fails. This computer has a Windows 98se OS installed including IE 6.

No worries re the oversight!

I think v6 is the highest you can go with 98. What you could try is uninstalling v6 and going back to v5. Reboot machine and briefly check if v5 produces the same problem. Download a fresh version of v6 and install. Check if that's solved it or not.

Add-ons in v6 - Not actually sure where these show up!! However, take a look with Explorer open, in View, Toolbars, Customize, and see if anything other than the ordinary stuff shows up. Or, go to Control Panel, Add and Remove programmes, and look for Google or Yahoo Toolbars, or indeed any other Browser toolbar add-ons, and then try removing them.

Re cleaning the machine, good as Avast may be you need to run more than just that prog. It looks like SuperAntiSpyware will run under '98 so give that a go.

Unfortunately, one of my current favourites, MalwareBytes, appears not to offer support for Windows 98.

Ed's suggestion of a different browser is a good one...

I don't think there is anything essentially wrong with your setup, simply a case of IE not being all that stable when run on WIN98 especially when called upon to run scripts.

I run five '98 machines here, and in every case at some point a web site would cause IE to collapse - this was often repeatable by re-visiting the offending sites, eBay being one of them.

There are two work-arounds I've discovered:
Disable JavaScript. (active scripting in IE) This will result in a small number of web pages not displaying correctly, but for the majority of (properly coded) sites it isn't a problem.

The other solution, and the one I implement here, is simply to install Firefox. Takes an age to load, but has been very stable on the systems here.

Hope this helps.
Andy.

Regards, Andy.

ROGER - G0AOZ,
Thanks for the new suggestions.I will go back to IE 5.5 to see if that helps.
I will check for add ons in v6 as you suggest.I will report back soon.

Hi Andy,
I've often heard that Win 98 was unstable, and I have really been living it in the past couple of months.
I recently tried Disabling JavaScript,it did'nt improve anything,but i'll try again.
Yeah,I'm getting closer & closer to installing Firefox.Problem is,it's my wife's computer......Thanks for the help.

I run IE6 under Win98SE having taken all the available updates available for both at the Microsoft update internet site. By and large it gives no problems, although occasionally certain sites do cause the program to freeze. As mentioned above in this thread, at one stage e-bay UK caused this (but e-bay.com did not). I reported this to e-bay techs. and I think they fixed it after a couple of days.(It seemed to be connected with those annoying pop-up adverts on the site).E-bay UK is OK now.

One thing I did find essential was to DISABLE SCRIPT DEGUGGING.(Go to TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS, click the Advanced tab then tick the disable script debugging box).

Prior to doing this, I was getting a lot of error messages on certain internet sites. These started to appear, by co-incidence or otherwise, when I installed a broadband connection using BT and their supplied modem.

I hope these comments may be of assistance to you.
