Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Help!!!!!! 2

I need help with microsoft exchange server 2003. I installed mses 2003 on my the network server and created 2 test e-mails to try out exchange with before I completely migrated the e-mail accounts to exchange on the network server. I had problems with the test e-mails, they would send e-mail but they wouldnt receive. I tried everything but could not get the test e-mails to receive they would only send. I tried uninstalling exchange completely to start over in case I had installed it incorrectly. I deleted all the mailboxes and mistakenly removed all exchange attributes from the administrator user name. So now im trying to install exchange once again and it doesnt let me install because it keeps telling me that I have to instll with a user name that has full exchange administrative rights to use exchange. Well I delegated the rights using the Exchange administrative delegation wizard and gave full exchange administrative rights acess to the administrator, I tried installing again and it is still telling me that I need to use a user with full exchange administrative rights and it only lets me install custom and not typical.. it also wont let me install forest prep or domain prep. Can anybody help me with this?? Pleaseeeeeeeeeee helpppppppppp!!!

If you've already done the /forestprep and /domainprep, you don't need to do them again.

When you say that they won't receive, does the sender get an NDR? If so, paste that here.

Yes I did install forest prep and domain prep on the first install.. BUt I completely removed exchange from the server.. at first i had problems uninstalling because I didnt remove a mailbox from the admin user.. then whe I did remove the mailbox I mistakenly removed all exchange attributes as well which is why im having so much difficulty now.. Im trying to install it again and it wont let me.. everytime I try and install the typical install it tells me it cannot install I have to instll with a user name that has full exchange administrative rights to use exchange. What account did you use to initially install it with? It doesn't sound like it was the administrator account.

It was the administrator account, but when I had problems uninstalling because I didnt remove a mailbox that was attached to the admin account.. then when I found out about that mailbox i removed it along with the exchange attributes from the admin account (a BIg mistake) but I gave the full exchange admin rights to the admin account again but its still telling me the same thing..

See if you can install JUST the management tools, then check the rights in there.

Thats what I did, I installed the management tools and used the delegation wizard to set the rights for the user. I gave the admin user full exchange organization rights but it is still giving me that same message.

Use ADSIEdit to remove Exchange from the Services container. You should then be able to reinstall.

Regarding the initial problem, did you create an MX record in public DNS for the users to be able to receive mail? If not then that is why your users could not receive.

Install the Admin Pack and Support Tools. Admin Pack is on the server in the System32 directory and Support tools are on the server CD under Support. I forget which package has it, but good to install both anyway.

once they are installed, run MMC. Then Add/Remove Snap-In. Choose ADSIEdit.

When prompted for a container click the drop down and choose Configuration. Then navigate down to Services and start expanding out till you find Exchange.

Important to note that you are at this point directly affecting AD. So I recommend having a full backup in case you mess something up. You should however be OK if you just locate the Exchange data and remove that.

I did all that, but when i added adsiedit it didnt give me an option to choose a container. It only gives me the option to connect to the domain. I tried connecting and all it does is show me the active directory.

Ok I finally figured it out and im going through the installation process. it seems as if its going through without any problems..

Markdmac, I have another question.. My server has a few drives. I want to install exchange on the e: drive but I want the e-mails and things to be hel on the d: drive since it is the biggest drive.. What would I have to do to accomplish that?

You specify the location you wish to install the exchange directory on during installation phase. When you have the option to select components to install, you have the option down to bottom to select the drive (d you want.

I would change the location of the database (\mdbdata) folder once you have completed the install. This is just in the properties of the data store (location of the database). You will also need to move the database folder to the location you wish also.

Ok guys, dont kill me... I tried to uninstall exchange after having it installed.. The reason I tried to uninstall it is so I can reinstall and make the changes to have the container on the d: drive and the exchange application on the e: drive. I was able to uninstall exchange with the exception of Mirosoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services.. Everytime I try to remove it I get the message "There is no such object on the server."

So I figured if its giving me this message that it isnt installed, So i try to install and i cant. I try to run forest prep to install that on the D: drive but it wont let me due to the problem stated above. ANybody have any ideas or suggestions???!!!! Pleaseeeeeeeeee

I don't understand why you would make the same mistake twice. You were advised you could change the database location after install.

Is this your production server you are messing with or a test machine?

Its a test machine, But I have to have exchange up and running very soon..

I understand what you are saying mark, but there isnt any exchange folders on the server period which is what i find confusing. I go into the d and e drive searching for the mdbdata folder and it's just not there, there is nothing related to exchange installed on the server period.. I'm lost I really am

You will need to walk AD with ADSIEdit again. Not everything that Exchange does is related to files. You REALLY need to NOT just uninstall things. Better to ask if there is a way to change before you just wipe stuff out. Not trying to scold you, only make you think twice first.

Schema changes can not be removed but can often be reapplied.

No offense taken here mark.. your right.. I should have just aked before I uninstalled anything..

I had ADSIedit up and I was looking through the services like you instructed before but it doesnt have anything relatred to exchange that I can see or know of..

What do you mean by walk AD.. I dont understand

By walk AD I meant to do what you are doing and be able to browse through all of the different setting in AD till you find what you are looking for.

Regretfully I do not have a box I can play with at the moment.

My honest and best advice would be to restore your test environment to the way it was before you started doing your Exchange tests. At this point you could potentially have things pointing to the wrong place even if you do get it installed again.
