Hi Guys & Gals,
I had been having problems with my printer drivers loading on start-up, and decided to uninstall & reinstall the drivers. The printer is an 'HP Photosmart 7350'.
When I try to reinstall the drivers from the installtion CD I get MS Error Code 2343 - "This device is already in use as a communication device", followed by an HP message saying that "HP Photo & Imaging 1.0 could not be installed".When I click "Finish" the Installation CD then proceeds to uninstall all that's been installed so far, and forces a system restart. So back to square one!
HP Photo & Imaging 1.0 is still showing in "Add/Remove" and can't be remove, and any attemt to remove this throws up error code 2343!!
This is driving me crazy and any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Try looking for entries in the registry etc delete all occurrences and then do a re-install, or if you are using XP try a system roll back.

Have tried roll-back/restore. No joy though.
I am a freelance IT journalist and have been testing 'Registry Mechanic'. I thought this may have caused the problem, and have restored all changes made by the utility. Still no joy though. Thanks for your reply. Any other ideas?

Gads, HP drivers can be a royal pain in the back-end. I have a HP 7110 officejet. Uninstalled it for some reason. And tried to reinstall. Which failed, saying the device was already installed or some really assine message. In order for the reinstall to actually work I went thru the registry manually. Did a search for HP. Deleted each instance I found. Then ran System Mechanic 5 and ran the reg. repair utility.

Only then was I able to reinstall this printer. Sometimes I REALLY hate HP.

Hi,

Here's HP's solution, wish me luck!!!

"I understand your concern.

An "Internal Error 2343" message displays on the computer screen when
installing or uninstalling the HP Photo & Imaging software. To resolve
the error message, delete the HP Photo & Imaging installation values
from the Windows registry.

CAUTION: An incorrect registry entry may cause serious system
problems or prevent the computer from starting. Always
backup your registry.

Step 1: Create a backup copy of the registry

1. Click Start and then Run.
2. In the Open field type: regedit
3. In the Registry Editor, select My Computer.
4. With My Computer highlighted, click File, and then
Export.
5. Browse to a storage location that is easy to remember.
6. Under Export Range, select All.
7. Type in a filename. HP suggests naming the file with the current
date, for example: Registry Backup 05-01-03.
8. Click the Save button to save the registry.

Step 2: Remove the HP Photo and Imaging installation values from the
Windows registry

1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window will open.
2. In the Open box, type REGEDIT and then click OK. The Registry
Editor window will open.
3. Click the plus (+) next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
4. Click the plus (+) next to Installer.
5. Click the plus (+) next to Products.
6. Click the first key under Products to highlight it.
7. On the right side of the screen, locate the ProductName line. If
this is the product with the install/uninstall error, press the Del
key on the keyboard to delete the highlighted key on the left side
of the screen. If this is not the product with the error, click
the second key under Products (on the left of the screen) and check
the Product Name. Continue until the key for the proper product
has been identified and deleted.
8. If the error occurred during installation of the Hp Photo & Imaging
software, continue with step 3. If the error occurred during the
uninstall process, skip to step 4.

Step 3: Install the HP Photo & Imaging software

1. Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.
2. Insert the HP Photo & Imaging software installation CD into the
CD-ROM drive.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation
of the HP Photo & Imaging software.

Step 4: Uninstall the HP Photo & Imaging software

1. Close the Registry Editor and return to the Windows Desktop.
2. Click Start and then double-click My Computer.
3. In the My Computer window, double-click [C:]. The contents of
C: will open.
4. Double-click the Program Files folder.
5. Double-click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
6. Right-click Digital Imaging, and then click delete.
7. Click Yes to confirm the file deletion.

NOTE: Deleting the Digital Imaging folder will disable all
devices using the HP Photo and Imaging Software. Only
delete this folder if you DO NOT have other HP products the
use this program.

Restoring a backup copy of the registry:

NOTE: Only restore the registry if you begin experiencing
computer difficulties after making changes to the registry.
Restoring to the previously saved registry file will cancel
any changes made to the system.

1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. In the Open field type: regedit
3. Press Enter.
4. The Registry Editor appears
5. Click Registry, and then Import Registry.
6. Browse to the registry file that was saved (just like the file that
was saved in Step 1).
7. Select the file and click OK.
8. Restart the computer.

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please
reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

Sincerely,

Michelle
HP Total Care"

Reply came from HP within the hour. Cool!!

How wonderful HP is <NOT>. As I stated in my previous post, I've had a similar problem. I eneded up manually removing all hp entries in the system registry. This was the ONLY way HP software would re-insatall.

Then follow the directions in your hp manual on how to install both the hardware and software.

Thanks for thatPRPhx. The great thing was that HP replied to me e-mail well within the promised hour, and, it worked!!
I also had another problem and that is still being resolved,
Cheers for now, will let you know the "final chapter" - "who done it"!!
