Microsoft Backup

I am using Microsoft Backup to backup everything from my E: partition to a separate Hard Disk (D)

The E: partition is 9.8 Gb in size and yet the size of the compressed backup file is over 15 Gb

How is this possible?

It may be that you're backing up MP3, MP4, AVI or MPEG files. These file types are already compressed and if you use another compression tool to try to compress them further they get bigger. Something to do with the compression algorithm needing to wrap control information around the compressed blocks, that already have control information from their native file type.

Well that would explain it, at least 5 gig comprises of MP3's and MPEG's
