Hi,

I want to know how I can join a workgroup to my Microsoft Access 2002 database without making the newly created workgroup (i.e. new_workgroup.mdw) my default workgroup.

Every time I join the new_workgroup.mdw to my database, all other Access databases default to new_workgroup.mdw.

I know you can create a shortcut to the database and type in the full path in the target using the new_workgroup.mdw to override the original workgroup (i.e. system.mdw) but I find when I do that that it works only if you use the shortcut. But what if someone happens to click on the original database which uses system.mdw? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using a workgroup? I am confused. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for your support! ;o)

What do you mean by the original db? If you have security on the db it is not only in the workgroup but also on all of the items in the db as well and it won't let in a user who is not accessing the db without joining the correct workgroup. Unless you didn't delete the rights under "User".

Read the Microsoft security faq's (read it several times)

If you properly secure your database (including creating the database when joined to a secured mdw, one that is NOT a copy of system.mdw), and you stay joined to the default mdw, it will not be possible to start your database without a shortcut. Period.

That's the way it should be done, so that you can fire up access any time you want w/o having to log in, but if you wan tot use a secured database, you will have to us a shortcut to get into it.

Read the FAQ many times. I've got it on my site. Also on my site is a write up of how to create batch files (instead of shortcuts), to smoothly deploy and start databases.
