Hello, I am new here so I really appreciate your patience. I have worked with many POS systems, but I am new to Micros.

I have a customer that no longer has a contract with Micros, and their kitchen terminal completely died(power supply tests 12.1 Volts, power light comes on with switch, but terminal is "Brain Dead") and this terminal ran the IDN printer in the kitchen. The customer has a terminal in a remote location of the restaurant that gets rarely used, and would like to swap it into the kitchen so the kitchen printer still works until we can order, get delivered, and set up a new terminal.

If I understand correctly, I can just run CAL on the(currently running and working) replacement terminal, and select the dead terminal from the list, and the CAL will load the settings used from the dead terminal to configure the replacement terminal. Is this true, or are there other changes I will need to make manually, such as reconfiguring printers or network settings? Since the dead terminal no longer operates, I have no way of manually checking it to see it's configuration, although I know it ran both a local ticket printer and the one further away in the back kitchen, and both printers were physically connected to the original terminal.

Is this swap something that could be done in the time between when the employees arrive and when the place opens for business two hours later? Is this something that can be done from just the replacement terminal, or would I need to do anything on the server?

Thanks again for your help!

Hey, just run the CAL installer and that's it. It will configure everything.

Thank you, I'll try it in the morning! When we get a replacement, do I just need to run CAL on it, selecting the proper server? And then select the now-offline backup terminal to configure it? Do I need to do anything with licensing, since the new machine will have a new MAC address than the one that no longer works?

It’s ok, you came to the right forum.

If you’re getting a replacement just plug it and configure it as the old WS.

Depending on the version you’re running, you might have to log in the DB manager and turn on discovery mode. It is in the Security or Encryption option that you have to enable that.

Otherwise you can check the Override Authentication mode on that workstation which you can find it on pos configurator/devices/user workstation I believe.

I'm on location now, but cant figure out how to run CAL on the workstation. I manually browsed to the program files folder and tried to run the cal applications, but one just started a service and the others did nothing. Is this something I am supposed to do on the server?

CAL should be on the desk top. Run its setup program. If its already setup you need to reconfigure it on that option. Pick your server then it should show the workstations. Pick the on you want install (should be the not is use one)

The desktop is empty. I can see CAL files and folders on the drive, so it must already be installed. Just to make sure, I am supposed to run CAL locally at the workstation, and NOT on the server, correct?

I found a link on the terminal called McrsCAL Config. When I click on it, it just brings up a window with a numeric keypad and what appears to be six random numbers in the top left corner, with a place for me to enter several more numbers...

OK,headway. The documentation says that the window that pops up is waiting for me to "decipher and enter the correct access code". How do I do this?

I found out how to decipher the code, and it let me into CAL. I picked the server, but the list of workstations is empty. You said previously something about overriding authentication, Is that the problem, and if so, is that something I do using the server or the terminal?

Did you wrote the server name, IP and selected the RES version? Also, check on POS CFG/DEVICES/NETWORK NODE that you have the right Platform Type selected for that WS.

I manually input the parameters for the missing workstation and the process started. The machine rebooted and CAL automatically ran. It now shows that the replacement terminal has the identity and IP address of the dead workstation, but when I run MICROS Desktop, it asks me for the name and password(that works on the server and previously worked on the workstation), it gives me an error saying "Unable to log in. Could not locate cached security information."...

i got it. I'll elaborate more later when I have more time. Thanks!

Edit: I had made a post previous to the one at the bottom of this post fully explaining the problems I had, but alas I apparently only previewed it and didn't actually submit it... :(

Initially, I couldn't get CAL to list the active/inactive workstations, and didn't even know of the existence of Micros POS Control Panel on the server, so I inspected the printer configuration of each workstation(which is very confusing) to try to determine which workstation was the kitchen unit, and I misidentified it. I had actually tried to clone the bar terminal, which was online and working, and when inputting it's information in CAL, CAL changed the terminals IP address to that of the working bar terminal, causing an IP conflict, and preventing CAL from performing the proper restore. Once I discovered Control Panel and identified the correct workstation(and still having to manually enter the workstation info into CAL since the list still didn't populate), the restore went through successfully, and the backup workstation perfectly took on the role of the dead kitchen terminal!

Pre-edit:

Also, I forgot to mention that, not being able to get CAL to list the local workstations, I enabled the "Authentication Override" options(which was actually in the "Network Node" menu and didn't help),and tried to check the status of "Discovery Mode" but could not locate the option in the Database Manager, and I think I looked everywhere!

Another aspect that might have been a factor in CAL, is that, while of course the server is reachable via the subnet of it's LAN interface and shows it's LAN interface's IP address in the server search results, when I actually select the server, it populates the server's address field in CAL with the server's WAN IP address for some reason. Not sure if that was a factor, but I did try it with and without clicking on the server search result, and the behavior was the same either way...

If the Workstation before was CE Clients
You need to change in the
POSCFG/NetworkNode To win32
ReloadDB in the ControlPanel
Restart Micros Cal Server / Windows Service on the Server.

By the next CAL on the Workstation you will see the Client if the Server and Clients are in the same subnet of the LAN.
If different you will never see the clients and you will have to enter name/ip manually.

But nevertheless what for a Micros Version do you have installed ?

I don't recall the specific version revision, but the server is 3700, and the workstations are all Win 8.1. The LAN interface and all the clients are all on the same subnet, and I can ping them all from the server. After thinking about it, it could also have to do with the fact that their are no gateways set to point to the server, even though it shouldn't be necessary since the terminals don't need internet access and the server wouldn't route any requests out to the WAN port anyhow...

Edit: and if the server and the terminals were on different subnets, then none of them would be able to talk to the server at all and the whole system wouldn't work, so that is obviously not the case here. Was just wondering why, when the terminals and the server ARE on the same subnet(and the terminals can all talk to each other and the server), that the CAL list would not populate...
