In addition I have a D-link switch that is a wireless router I have this because my third station is wireless. It has two sides and a modem I've been told I need all of these connected in conjunction so I have a private internal network as well as internet access. Do I have to have internet access, as we are not using the credit card terminals on the machine? Curently the back computer "server" is connected to the internet via the modem then all workstations are neworked into that modem via cat5. It would seem to me that all this is doing is providing internet to all of the workstations, as well as the server.
The workstations don't have to be connected to the internet, in fact they shouldn't be. Even if you were taking credit cards, only the server has to be able to get on the internet. I take out the default gateway settings in all of our workstations.
They do have to be connected to the server and each other through a switch though.
The setup I use in all of our restaurants is one NIC with a 192.168.x.x IP connected to a switch that's dedicated to the Micros stuff. There's a second NIC that's connected to the manager & chef pc's through a second switch. Our T1 and DSL backup modems are connected to this switch as well. This provides us with internet access for all the pc's while keeping the workstations connected to the Micros server on there own closed network.
