I have been having an issue with customers saying that they are getting double charged, what is actually happening is one is an authorization that drops off, but would like to find a way that that authorization does not show up in the first place.

We are a bar so most transactions begin with us opening a tab for the patron and then adding things to the tab as they order and then authorizing, closing and having them sign the ticket, I have taken a picture included below of our configuration, Any help on how to set it up so customers do not see 2 charges when they look at their charges would be greatly appreciated.

We get calls like that all the time too. Its just people not understanding that the pending charge will go away. You want to keep this the way it is in my opinion because the Auth is basically a check to ensure the customer has enough money / credit to pay for their food. Since the finalization goes through for an separate amount (when it includes the tip) customers will often see them as separate pending charges.

Is there any way to have it closed to zero or have the it closed when the card is closed out instead of leaving a pending charge ? It is getting daunting replying to customers and having to explain the pending charge

Talk to your credit card processor... Ask them to have the pre-auth dropped off when the credit card is finalized. If not it will sit for up to 7 days before it drops off itself.

We developed an EMV integration for the Micros RES POS system that's been in the market since early 2016. It automatically reverses the pending authorization on a bar tab which eliminates calls about double charging as described in this thread. You can learn more about it at
Alternatively, another solution is to allow the customer to use a QR code to order and pay from their phone. With this type of solution, you are not running an authorization when the tab is first opened. Instead, the customer enters their payment card info when they initial place the order and the card is charged as a separate transaction. Then when they want to order another round, they use their phone and they have the option to charge the same card again without having to re-enter the information. The customer receives a digital receipt via sms text message for each QR order and pay transaction so they will have their charge slips readily available on their phone should they question their cc charges. It is also a memorable experience for the customer so they are less likely to question the charges. You can learn more about this technology at
