Have a client who is on RES 3.2 on win2k with hard drive failure pending.

Does anywhere have or be willing to share ( for pay-pal donation, or good internet karma) a RES 3700 3.2 Install disc??

I have the SP files and all the setup files, was thinking about migrating to xp, but without the discs a db move isn't looking fun.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

A little bit more background, these sites are scattered across a territory that was abandoned by two local dealers, one of which I used to work for. I have gone through old contacts of Micros Techs I used to know and went to various classes with, but alas a lot of us have moved on. I am looking for the original 3.2 discs or a location (dropbox, g-drive, from which to procure.) If the upgrade path isn't available within a few weeks I have a large territory that is looking to migrate out of micros.

1) What have others done when faced with very outdated Micros RES sites, in particular those on win2k? (2.6,3.1,3.2) The sites are a chain of Mexican shops, huge menus, lots of changes.

2) When faced with no dealer, direct via Micros, what types of support options are available, if any?

If I were you, I would get them up to RES 4.10. The only problem is that you would have to upgrade their activation codes. When faced with an upgrade path like this, we usually did their database from scratch. While they usually aren't happy about it initially, they get over it when they realize how much cleaner the system is and how much faster it runs. You COULD upgrade an existing database, but something like that will never go smoothly.. you would either have to spend a lot of time testing and tweaking the upgrade database before implementing it, or just slap it in and hope for the best.

Hi,

I have them, let me create an image of themselves and their hotfixes.

To go further with this idea, I am stuck in a situation where I am recreating the wheel. Has anyone found a POS product that will run with the clients based on Win CE 4.2? (Old WS4). This client has 7 terminals (WS4) and would rather not reinvest in terminals.

The main problem here is PCI-DSS. This client is using a third party gateway that is blind to care about what system they are using. The regional dealer has yet to call me about a license upgrade, but estimated in the 6-9k range. They are still running CC on a 3.2 win2k system. Years of data floating in the db. Way out of PCI compliance. Should we just remove CC processing all together?

I am looking at the possibility of finding a simple POS app that will run on the old terminals, even if it means upgrading the Win CE from 4.2 to 6.0

I am walking in behind a dealership that charged maint. contracts but did about zero. Now all hell is breaking loose, and clients would like a migration path, but the only thing I keep coming up with is a total reinstall of something.

I just hate to see 7 terminals just canned, due to the license fee and PCI issues.

@jpulkj --- thanks for imaging and look forward to at least a backup plan.

How very odd. Just upgrading to RES 4 would solve your PCI issues so long as you install up to a certain version... 4.10 to be safe, as I know that is still PCI. The WS4's work on RES 4. Last I checked the upgrade from RES 3 to RES 4 was maybe a few hundred... I want to say it wasn't even that much. That is just for the 3700 activation code of course, not including the labor they would charge for the 'programming', but by the sounds of things you could manage that yourself.

If you want a simple POS, e7 is pretty simple and works just fine on a WS4... granted, you would still have to pay for the licensing of an entirely new system. I can't think of a single system that, purchased 'from scratch', wouldn't be incredibly expensive. If you're doing all the other work yourself, I would think upgrading your license would be the cheapest way to go.

If the issue here is maintaining PCI and not any real issue with the system itself, switch to stand-alone credit card terminals. Once you are no longer processing credit card information through your POS, PCI no longer matters on the POS system. If you want to freshen things up a bit, you could pull a few tricks like.. Clear all the sales and labor data. Delete old menu items after clearing. Image the hard drive to a new solid state drive (judging by the age of the system, they probably don't have an internal drive large enough to make that prohibitively expensive). Do some windows clean ups on the registry and system files. Put in a new gigabit nic with a gigabit switch (be wary of any PMS that use MAC address licensing though). Doing all of that should get the system feeling 'like new', and with the switch to stand beside terminals, you'll never have to worry about replacing the system for PCI considerations.

Moregelen thanks for the tips. Would you recommend that they stay on win2k? Over the last few days I have talked to heartland payment as for what they require for CC/EDC. They state that they only work with 4.5 and above, I was also told to look at this link Micros PCI product Lifecycle .

I finally called the current processor and after talking to a few people they state they will get back to me on this one. It is Mercury. So we will see what they find. They initially stated that with their "dynamic library driver" is secure all the way back to 3.2 sp7 hf7. Not sure on win2k though, and they were not either.

Looking over the document mentioned above it states that 4.3- 4.10 are suitable for deployment until 10-28-2013.

Only 4.11, and 4.12 are suitable for new deployments beyond October, 4.12 is the only one listed beyond April 2014.

The Database has been upgraded from 2.5 or below (over the years) and is stting at 700mb.

I ordered an ssd, and a gig switch today. Micros still hasn't replied about the inquiry to the license codes. For now I guess the best bet to avoid downtime is a clone of the current HD. Upon further inspection I am pretty sure the Win2k server is infected with malware due to the Office PC being infected by several trojans and a rootkit. If I clone I may be taking that along for the ride. Any recommendations for something that still works for malware removal on win2k?

I honestly have no idea if you can even install res 3.x on Windows XP. If you have the option (ie: they pony up the money) definitely go with RES 5 on Windows 7 and you'll be set for a good long while. XP is no longer going to be PCI soon. I'm not positive, but I think they only need to upgrade the 3700 activation code and KDS activation code, assuming they have KDS. Hopefully they can price you for those codes without it being too expensive.

As for AV for Windows 2000 ... Geeze! I would have no idea. I doubt software developers bothered to maintain programs for it. That stuff be ooooooold.

Again though if you manage to switch to credit card terminals provided by your processor rather than integrated, it doesn't matter beyond sucking to have that junk on your computer.

Okay this keeps getting better. I spoke to the CC processor today and they wanted to email me some info, so I said sure and asked what it was. It turned out to be the exact document that I had linked above. She said it was the first time she had seen it, and according to this that they should not be taking CC at all on that system. The only version as of Oct they will support is 4.11 and above.

Stand alone terminals are $300 a piece * 7 = $2100!

plus a higher fee. :)

Will the WS4 run on RES 5.0?

We have a couple of sites that are RES 5.0 with WS4's. We have only seen complaints from one of those sites; they said things were running slower. After having a tech down there for a day watching them ring in transactions, we couldn't see anything wrong beyond the fact that they were expecting something to be wrong with it.

I would suggest keeping the themes that the workstations are currently running; the RES 5 themes are a bit heavy for WS4's.

I know you said they have huge menus, but if you're going to do an upgrade to RES 5 I would really suggest you invest the time to do the menu over again. After years of running, these menus tend to get a bit clunky.

Well, I spoke to the dealer (District Office) on Friday. I called left a message mid day, and was called back at 4:30 pm and told that, however talented I may be, only the dealer can perform the upgrade. Also that although the WS4 may run on 5.0 they require the client to upgrade to ws5. Also that they would only work with the owners. I was then told to have a good weekend.

I also said" Good Day, sir"

Now colorful language comes to mind, but should I just call another dealer in another state? Or is this just the way it is? Based on conversations with the Owner, He refuses to do business with the District Office based on past inquires and dealings with them, similar to mine.

You don't have to work with a local dealer necessarily; we are based on Georgia and have sites as far out as California. But yes, unless you're a major account, you have to go through a dealer. I have no idea if another dealer would help you or not as I don't know the dealers in your area. You can just stick wi what you have and do stand alone credit card terminals. Are they quick service? You don't necessarily have to have a processor at every single workstation if they aren't quick service.
