I have a Windows XP based MICROS 3700 system with two additional Windows CE terminals.

Can I upgrade my server to Windows 7 and still use the existing MICROS Eclipse terminals? I don't think the terminal hardware will support Win 7.

We are running MICROS version 4.6. Need upgrade options to maintain PCI compliance before we open in May 14.

Thanks to all.

So you can't swipe gift cards? I thought the encryption functionality was tied to the CC Auth since you have to put keypads on a couple of workstations for manual CC entry.

Nope. They have an integrated mag reader in the ws5a and mtablet that encrypt while you swipe - its done by the mag card reader itself. They bounce back the gift card number, which you then forward to the SVC host adapter. This is what I understood from the PMA I was given. Worst part? We enabled it on an mTablet to test.. turns out that, right now at least, short of sending it back to Micros and having them reset it, you can't turn encryption back off.

So what happens with 3rd party gift cards that don't use SVC? We use Paytronix and Givex for our gift cards, does that mean we're just SOL when we upgrade to the encrypted readers?

I know.. its a crazy situation. Honestly, I want to use the at-the-table chip and pin readers instead, but eh. Thats a few years off even though they are supposed to be issuing chip and pin in the States by 2015.

But yeah.. I don't think it was thought out very well. I think you're SOL right now if you run anything other than credit cards. Oh yeah.. and use anything other than Transaction Vault. Yuuuuup.

And nothing right now says you have to use the encrypted readers. They are purely an option to use if you want to - at least for now, until they decide otherwise - take your POS out of scope of PCI.

That doesn't really make much sense. If the data isn't decrypted at the server then you can't use mag cards to access OPS on the workstations.

I realize that. But right now, from whats I've seen and the people I've talked to, the ONLY reason it is considered to take the POS out of scope, is because the data gets encrypted before it even hits the workstations, and never gets decrypted until it hits the gateway. If it ever got decrypted along that chain, the system is suddenly with PCI scope again, so it defeats the purpose.
