Hello,

We have an old Micros 2700 POS and would like to add a new printer to the system. Is there any documentation or anyone know the steps to do that? The printer is an Epson TM88 with an IDN card. The printer is connected to the IDN card on terminal, I just need to get it to print now.

Hi,
this is not easy, what I remember from some years ago is that every POS has got a connectivity table in the setup. The printer has to be entered in there first.
I will try to get more info and come back asap.
Mirko

That is what I got - hope it helps. If you need mor info, do not hesitate to ask.

2700 finding and programming / setting the IDN ID's for remote kitchen / bar printers

1 ) insert the illinois key and turn it to the 3 o'clock position
2 ) press shift and enter at the same time
3 ) press #2
4 ) press #2
5 ) press #1
6 ) press #1
this will bring you to the device table in the configurator
use the shift and #2 to scroll down the list until the remote devices are listed
the fourth column will be the IDN ID

#*#*#*# DO NOT CHANGE THIS UNLESS YOU ARE POSITIVE THAT IT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED #*#*#*#

take the information from this column and use it to set the physical dip switches on each device to the corresponding IDN ID and then reset the machine that controls printing and then confirm in MGR procedure #7 that all of the devices are set to print to themselves

open a check and ring some test items and confirm that they print from the proper devices

Kind regards

Thanks Mirko! Unfortunately it still didn't get it working. Here is a detailed run down of the system and hopefully you can help shed some light on getting the printer working.

The current layout is as follows:
There are 3 registers that currently print to 2 printers, one on the front counter and one in the kitchen. We want registers 1 & 2 to print the currently working printers and have register 3 print to the newly added printer.

When I went into the order devices (options 2,2,3) to see what printers they were printing to and they were printing to:

Kitchen Printer (TMU-200B)
Roll Printer #2 (TMU-200B)

I then went into the device configuration (options 2,2,1,1) and it looked like this:

Printer Type ISN ISN LNA IDN ID #LFS
Kitchen 2 1 5 2 12
Roll Printer #2 2 1 5 1 1

I saw an unused printer that had an IDN ID set to 0. How should I set the printer in this table and which IDN should it be set to? It is epson TM88II thermal printer.

Thank you again for all of the help in getting this issue resolved.

Terry

Hi Terry, I will attach a doc in German, that shows the IDN-DIP-switch-settings on the printer.

Please be aware, that the Interface (DIP-switches) are built in bottom up.

Hope, this helps.

Otherwise - that is for the time being the only info I got from mic - but I may ask for more.

Kind regards

Go to device table (shift-enter, 2-2-1-1)
on a blank line put in the following to set up a direct connected thermal ptr;
1.
Name=Reg #3 ptr
Type=2
GNA=1
LNA= whatever the register's LNA is that the ptr is connected to
IDN=1
LF=0
Make a note of which line # (IE:7,8,9 etc.)you put this all on
Save Changes (Shift - double zero)

2. Go into System unit config (shift-enter, 2-2-2-1), press enter when the Reg # comes up in the box. Page down once, this is where all the ptr's for the Register are set up. Input the Line # from the device table you noted in the 1st step. Skip items (leave zero) that you know you don't have or use IE: journal, check endorsement, validation etc. but be sure to assign check, receipt, report.
Save Changes.

It should print now if your ptr has dip switch #4 on and all the rest off.

So you must 1st put the ptr in the device table, then you have to assign the ptr under the system unit config. Good Luck!

Stay away from the remote order device table (Shift-Enter 2-2-3-1), that's a separate area for assigning which ptr's are "remote" ptr's IE:kitchen, bar etc.

Thank you for the response TobeThor! I will give that a try tomorrow and see if that does the trick.

I have a similar situation where I am trying to connect a thermal printer to a system unit.

I have the patch cable running from one of the IDN jacks on the back of the printer to a jack on the sys unit. I'm not sure which jack to plug the cable into on the back of the sys unit.

The sys unit has two jacks on the bottom that we use to daisy-chain sys units together. I believe these are ISN jacks.

Then the sys unit has a board installed, which is either a CIB or TIB (the system diagnostics say that a TIB is installed, but I don't know what a TIB is). The board has three jacks, two of which are grouped together, and one a little off by itself. I believe that the one off by itself is the IDN jack, and the one that I have the other end of the patch cord from the printer connected to.

Now, I have been successful in getting an integrated roll printer working by following TobeThor's instructions above, setting LNA=1 (the system unit number is also 1) and IDN=0. But I have not had any luck getting the thermal printer working.

I set dip switch 1 on and all the rest off, making the printer number 8. I then set LNA=1 and IDN=8 in the device table (2-2-1-1) and enable the printer for the system unit (2-2-2-1), but I get the error message that no IDN printer is present.

Could someone please shed some light on what I might be doing wrong?

Let's verify the IDN interface works in the printer OK.
1. Turn Illinois key clockwise (Mgr position)
2. power off Micros
3. Hold down the ENTER button only and power back on (Diagnostics)
4. Choose - Output, Printer, IDN, Print, index 08 for ptr #.
(If it were me I'd test ptr # 01 after changing the ptr DIP switches to only #4 on - just for yucks)
5. To exit diagnostics perform a system reset
(Hold down clear when powering up with Mgr key turned clockwise)

This will send a print command out of the IDN port on the Micros and if all is well the printer should print. If it doesn't, either the IDN port on the Micros MoBo is NG or the IDN card in the printer is NG. Of course I'm assuming the ptr actually works at all. Does the ptr self-test? Power up while holding down the line feed button...if it prints several legible lines it's good to go.

This print test establishes whether or not the ptr can communicate with a Micros POS regardless of programming parameters. It's a great tool to rule out hardware issues when trouble shooting printing issues. Repost your results.

Wow forgot too mention. Is the patch cable you're using a straight thru six pin cable? You can't use a crossover or phone cable, which can look very much the same.

The cable has six pins. It's not a phone cable. I don't know if it's straight through or not, but this cable was previously used to successfully connect two system units together.

TobeThor,

I have verified that the printer is working by performing the self test and the test with dip switch 7 on.

However, I'm not sure which is the IDN port on the mobo. There are six ports in all that the patch cable fits into. 3 are on the mobo and 3 are on the board attached to the mobo, which I believe is a CIB.

Of the 3 ports on the mobo, two are grouped together and we can use them to connect system units together. Are these IDN ports?

Of the 3 ports on the CIB, one is off by itself. Is this an IDN port?

Which of these ports should I be using?

I will try to get my hands on the Illinois key today so that I can enter diagnostics mode.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry I should have mentioned BECAUSE plugging IDN ptr's into the wrong place can damage those fragile IDN interface cards. On the back of the MoBo the ports are, as you face it;

#1 Cash drawer #1 (round)
#2 Cash Drawer #2 (round)
#3 ISN Comm port (connection to other POS)
#4 ISN Comm port (connection to other POS)
#5 AT Style PC keyboard port
#6 IDN Printer port

DANGER: Every Epson ptr has a cash drawer kick port on them (it has the exact same port/pins etc) If you plug the Micros IDN connection cable that is coming from the IDN port on the XL MoBo into the Epson cash drawer kick you risk damaging the IDN interface card. Put a piece of tape or a blank plug in the Epson printer CD kick port (to disable it) and you will save your business a ton of money in the future.

Narvin,
"Of the 3 ports on the CIB, one is off by itself. Is this an IDN port?"

There's only one useful port on that CIB. It's kinda in the middle, that's the IDN port. Ignore the modem port (I think that's on the bottom) and the 9-Pin serial port.

Also, if you're gonna connect ptr's via that IDN port on the CIB board familiarize yourself with the diagnostic procedure to re-establish communications to remote devices. Power outages or power issues in general will cause that CIB to drop communications with remote printers and that procedure will re-establsih comms plus it helps determine if the Micros POS has a physical connection to the printer that seems to have an issue. That doc (from that website mentioned earlier) has saved us several hundred dollars in dealer fees.

Okay, I've performed some diagnostic steps.

I'm pretty sure that I'm using a straigh-through cable because when I look at both ends, the wire colors are in the same order. Also, I can use this same cable to connect system units via their ISN comm ports.

I believe that the IDN port on the system unit is bad because I get an error timeout when I do the Output-->Printer-->IDN-->Print test in diagnostics mode.

I believe that the printer and it's IDN card work because the printer self tests okay and also tests fine when I set dip switch 7 on.

I also believe that the printer works because if I plug it into the IDN port of the CIB and do Comms-->Option Board-->Option Board A-->04-->41, I see the printer version.

We've got two system units. The one I'm trying to program with the suspected bad IDN port is at home. I'm going to try the IDN port on the other unit at the restaurant when I get a chance, now that I know which port that is, thanks to TobeThor.

In the meanwhile, I would like to try to set up the printer on the CIB IDN port. Do you know how I would setup the CIB and the printer in the device table?

Do you know how I would setup the CIB and the printer in the device table?"

Yes. Do you currently have the CIB set up and working in your system? If Yes, it's pretty simple to add your printer.

In the Device table, the printer line is
Name Type GNA LNA ID# LF's
Printer 2 1 ? 8 2

Assign a name that gives reference (IE:Cold Printer, or REG#3 Printer)
The LNA# must be the same as the LNA# for the CIB.
The ID#8 is what you mentioned earlier (set by dip switches)

This assumes you already have a CIB.

Post of you don't have a CIB in the system...OK
