Hi

I am very confused about IBM LPAR on p-serious
Is Micro-partition can run on AIX 5.2 ??
(for example, I have one LPAR with 2 dedicated CPU
could it simulate 20 virtrul CPUs??)

Does it only works on AIX 5.3 ?

Micropartioning is only available for 5.3. With 5.2 you can only assign dedicated processors, so you won't be able to simulate 20 CPUs

Yes MoreFeo is right! You Can do DLPAR though!

Khalid

You may want to consider VIO, which allows you to share your resources instead of doing a dedicated resource allocation.

Again, VIO and all other shared partition stuff only works from AIX 5.3 onwards.

I have a question: if you use an HMC to manage the LPARS, you don't need to have a VIO, right?

Thanks,

VIOs and HMCs have different functions.

HMCs are for managing LPARs.

VIOs *are* LPARs, that provide special services to other LPARs.

hoangkim,
You have a new question so start a new thread please.
Yes, you are right.
You don't NEED to have a VIO server just because you have an HMC.

so you need both HMC and VIO just to run the p5 machine with 4 LPARS. And the VIO is an LPAR itself. So if you want to have 2 VIOs for redundancy, so you need 6 LPARS to have a 4 LPARS system. Am I right?
