We have 3 users who use a shared workbook which resides on our shared files server. When a user makes changes on the workbook and attempts to save it, they get a "THE FILE IS LOCKED. TRY THE COMMAND AGAIN LATER". I had the users exit the file. I opened it and attepmted to save my changes and I got the same error message. I had them reboot their computers and they still got same message. they are opening the file one user at a time, and they are still getting the same message. I used the "save as" option and saved it in a different name and they were able to use it for an hour and then it locked again. I had to do another'save as".
Please help.

Try opening computer management on the file server and look in System tools > Shared Folders > Open Files.
See if there is still an instance of the file there. If it is, you can right click and close the file.
In the meantime, I would check the workbook to make sure there are no macros or anything that would keep it running in memory. It sounds like it might be closing down correctly.

I had closed all the open file sessions and the users still got the error message.
to check if there is a macro running, I went to tools\macr0\macros but there was nothing there. Was I looking at the right thing??

Looking for macros you'll also need to go into the VB Editor (ALT+F11) and check all sheet modules, the workbook module and [obviously] any code modules. The reason for this, above what you've already checked, is that any routines marked 'Private' won't show up in the macro list.

Also this might help

If a man says something and there are no women there to hear him, is he still wrong? [ponder]
How do I get the best answers?

The VBA editor only shows the funcres.xla, the HTML.xla and the VBAProject(filename). No code is displayed when I click on the VBAProject.
The users make sure the workbook is closed by the other before they open it and none if them is using the quick view. They all share an office.
