It was when I was working with Solaris Help desk looking for a command that will tell me the disk on a system. They said to cancel out after it gave me a listing of disks....

Anyway here is the output:

Volume name = < >
ascii name = <ST340016A cyl 19156 alt 2 hd 16 sec 255>
pcyl = 19158
ncyl = 19156

well, I would say, you definitely do not want a disk to be set up this way :-(
there are many "philisophies" how to do it right, so asking three people, you will get four opinions; nevertheless a few comments from my side:
a 37 GB disk gives you plenty of space
Part 0 root (starting at cyl 0) should be 4+ GB
Part 1 swap (following cylinders) depends on memory and application, could be anything from 512 MB (if there is at least 512 MB RAM) to 4+GB (e.g. SAP/3
will require at least 3 times the amount of memory, which should be at least 1GB / CPU)
Part 2 backup covers the whole disk, don't touch
Part 3 usr 4+ GB or joining with root, because of some statically linked libraries; root (+usr) 8+ GB
Part 4 var from 1 GB to 4 GB ok, sometimes more
Part 5 home everything else, except for 20-30 MB
Part 7 SDS database, 20-30 MB is enough

If you plan to install lots of freeware/applications
something like this will do:
Part 0 root+usr 16 GB
Part 1 swap 1 GB
Part 3 var 4 GB
Part 5 home 16 GB
Part 7 20-30 MB for SDS (no FS on this)
Sol8 needs 1.2 GB in root/usr
Sol9 needs 1.9 GB in root/usr

I would recommend a complete re-install
just for the excersise, sorry ;-}

Thanks for the info. This is my first install of Solaris so any advice is most welcome. I used the default from the Jumpstart install. Do you have any suggestions on a tek tip or web page that would give me a good step by step of the initial install?

I installed HP-UX and AIX systems without a clue, but Journaled file systems and logical volumes are a lot easier to alter......

Aha - Jumpstart strikes again!

0 root wm 258 - 320 125.51MB
::::
4 swap wu 0 - 257 513.98MB

A normal installation would give you

0 root wm 0 - 63 125.51MB
1 swap wu 64 - 320 513.98MB

seems time for a faq / how-to
I volunteer, but I can not promise immediate delivery
:)

if you lay out the FS like described above, the rest can be done without re-installing the system, I think;

for SDS always keep 20-30 MB on slice 7 free
for Veritas keep two slices (6&7) free and 50 MB or so
do not change your root shell
get a decent prompt: PS1......
add an "admin" to ftp and login remote
in /etc/default/kbd set "alternate" to avoid reboots

Thanks for volunteering.... Leave a note on this thread when completed.

I am going to test what has been given me and see if I can re-install it correctly. The only true way to learn is to ask and then do....

(Someday we'll all look back on this and it will all seem funny)
