I am about to kick-off a DW project and know that some sort of meta data repository is a must.

We are using MS SQL Server 2000 with DTS for ETL. I know SQL Server comes with Meta Data Services but don't know much about its usefulness as a meta data repository or if it is just limited to ETL meta data. Also the project has a tight budget so high end big dollar products are out.

My specific questions are:

1) How useful is SQL Server Meta Data Services as a meta data repository for all aspects of the DW (not just ETL) meta data?

and

2) Can I have some recommendations as to relatively affordable yet functional meta data repository software.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

I have not worked much with the Meta Data Services, but it is a great tool to use to track information about the package and the transformation except that to my understanding (I may be worng) but I do not think you may use it with all the DTS Tasks.

Using SQL Server metadata is a major pain - we used informatica - I think it is called "SuperGlue"

Our datawarehouse is build on sql server and we have a number of feeds coming in from various data stages and a peoplesoft ERP.

How is your experience for ETL with MS SQL Server DTS? We found it useful for one off data transformation - but for schedule task etc with multiple feeds - it was nor practical.

Ended up with data mirror for ETL.
