I'm trying to start the messenger service so I can use NET SEND command across my workgroup, but it won't start. Event log isn't much help.

Any ideas?

It's probably been disabled by default, and probably blocked due to all the Messenger spam that was common a while ago.

If it's something that's really necessary, I'd say chase that general venue, that it's somehow been disabled by the administrators.

messenger service was turned off by default from SP2 - but you should just be able to start it (or set it to automatic to start all the time). How are you trying to start it (eg, run services.msc, find messenger, open its properties, set it to manual or automatic (you can't start it while its disabled), then click on Start?) And what actually happens.

I've solved the problem now guys. I was indeed going to 'services' and clicking the messenger service and the clicking start. The problem was caused by the trial download of LANTalk I had installed. Once I had disabled this software the messenger service started normally. Thanks for the replies though.
