Can anyone tell me where i can get info regarding using the Messenger Service included in Windows.
I'm not talking about MSN messenger but the service that is responsible for those annoying pop-ups. Contrary to popular belief there is actually a use for it on private networks but every resource on the Web seems to tell me how to get rid of it and not how to use it.

Any advice is appreciated, Chris.

If you do not net LAN messaging and alerts, DISABLE the service, you don't need it.
If you do, make sure your firewall blocks the ports.

The messenger service built into Windows XP and Windows 2000 is used by the net send command. You can use this software service as a kind of instant messanging tool to let users on your LAN know of system outages, important messages, etc.. It only works for W2k and XP if the messenger service is running. For Windows 98 you must have the Winpopup program running. I would not recommend it as a instant messaging solution (although it could be used for that) because the commands are not very user friendly. The best thing I heard this could be used for is scripting. I believe if you know how to write scripts you can use this service to alert you of network problems and such. Here is a link that will give you more information.

also you can go into your command prompt, and type the following:
net send /?
this should also give you the commands and its accompanying options. Let me know if this helps your cause.

We keep this service running in a Domain environment for emergency messages. Our intranet is protected by a firewall so we do not get the ads.

We use it in two ways, the first is to do a broadcast message to all users/machines to tell them about a problem or need for immediate action. Alternatively, if we see a machine that is generating suspicious network traffic but we do not know its physical location we will send the machine a pop-up asking them to call us.

The syntax is:
net send <target> <message - 80 characters max>

The target can be a * which is everybody, a username or a computer name. Use net send /? to get the exact syntax for the target.
