Hello,

I was handed (perhaps that should be dumped) a Partner ACS R 5, with Partner Messaging R 1 a while back. I want to change the IP to our companies standard, since I am tired of changing my IP to match the Messaging box. I do not have the serial cable. I have read threads talking about dialing in, and pressing ***3, IIRC (I have those instructions copied onto my PC.) I have not seen instructions showing what I am supposed to do AFTER I dial in. I was wondering if I should use Telnet or what?

Hoping somebody has a suggestion of what manual to read, or a link to some instructions.

Thanks, thanks, thanks,

Jeff

Hey itpphoneguy,
It was an older VS system. Looks like it will be manual programming of that one.

Jlsniu,
My info says pin 1 of the RJ45 will be the one on the left if you are looking into the female (card edge)with the notch down (gold pins up). Colors may not always be the same.

I have a partner mail VS R5.0 and it doesn't have the LAN labeled but the RS232 is and their is a hole for both. I still wasn't getting connectivity with a cross over cable but I'm still working on that.

Based on the above diagram...
355AF Adapter Pinout:
DB9 adapter and a RJ45,
RJ45 DB9
1 9
2 8, 6, 1
3 4
4 5
5 2
6 3
7 not used
8 not used

How does wire 2 go to 8,6, and 1 ? Am I reading this wrong?

1 is a ground, and connecting them all together locks those pins "low". It's an RS232 thing.

If you're not comfortable playing with the parts, you can buy a 355AF for ~$20 several places on the 'net. Just input 355AF and Avaya into Google and voila!

Hi 392,
I agree totally, even at list, it's a better use of your time.

Status Update:

I purchased a 355AF adapter and a serial adapter so that it would fit the computer. Still nothing. Hyperterminal says its connected but just gives me a blinking cursor. Still no link activity with the unlabeled Lan port. Any other thoughts now?

You have it set for 19200,N,8,1? I'd bet you're running 9600 or 115400. Set both the port speed on the PC and the software connect speed of the terminal program.

And you are connected to the lower RJ45 on the Messaging R1 (Not a VS R1) marked RS232, set on the proper Com port of the laptop/PC, using a 8 conductor straight through patch cord between the RS232 port and the 355A(F)?

You should be able to plug in, connect and hit enter for the "User Login" prompt.

I've never seen a blown RS232 port on an R1/R6, I can't imagine what it would take to do that.

Hi jlsniu,
392 is correct. Nothing will happen until you hit the enter key. If you leave hyperterminal connected and reboot the system, you will get status info as the vm comes up. Even on a VS series. It looks like the new ones are running some version of Linux.
I have used Hyperterminal sucessfully with flow control set to none.

Set up as per post and hit both enter keys and nothing. Any other thoughts that might be helpful?

Hi jlsniu,
Did you say you had a Partner Mail VS R5? Lan connectivity does not happen until you get to the Partner Mail R1 or R6. The RS-232 does housekeeping stuff only on the VS series, not really useful to you. You can watch some boot up stuff with the RS-232 properly connected, but why bother?
-Chris

Well that makes sense. I'll quit trying now. Thanks for everyone's help.
