Hello,

I was handed (perhaps that should be dumped) a Partner ACS R 5, with Partner Messaging R 1 a while back. I want to change the IP to our companies standard, since I am tired of changing my IP to match the Messaging box. I do not have the serial cable. I have read threads talking about dialing in, and pressing ***3, IIRC (I have those instructions copied onto my PC.) I have not seen instructions showing what I am supposed to do AFTER I dial in. I was wondering if I should use Telnet or what?

Hoping somebody has a suggestion of what manual to read, or a link to some instructions.

Thanks, thanks, thanks,

Jeff

Whoops, I think I found the answer to my question...at

thread688-614949 will try the instructions tomorrow or monday. Hope I can follow them, and they are complete.

Sorry, didn't read back in the forums far enough.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Actually, you can't change the IP address without logging in via the SYSTECH admin login, then the password. Easiest way to do it is via a laptop locally with a 355A adapter, it always has somewhat unnerved me administering important items while relying on a tenuous modem link. I've had too many systems (PBXs) that decided to "program themselves" after hearing noise on the line....

You cant get into a Partner messaging remotely using the GUI. IF, you hyperterminal into it on site, you will use "SYSADMIN" as the logon and whatever password that was first put in the unit in the install. Once you change the lan you can get into it via the LAN port.
Avaya sucks for making us use both R1 and R6 sofware seperately. They could have consolidated them both into 1 program for both releases.

Sorry, slurred the two together in my head....

SYSADMIN or TECH1000 will do the IP change, TECH1000 will give the additional ability to change the maintenance time and view/add to the logs.

Couldn't attest to the onsite vs. offsite, I do all mine onsite to verify completion.

jdriver, I followed the link to the previous thread you posted above, and it doesn't have anything to do with what you want to do. If you want to do this via modem, dial into the auto attendant, and have the modem pause then dial "**3" (Note 2 stars, not 3 as you posted in your original message). Wait until you see connected on the screen, then press return. You will be prompted for your log in, which is "sysadmin" and then your password, which is the numeric password that you have on the system admininstrator's mailbox. From there you will get menus, select 1 to change the configuration, 3 to change the IP address, enter the new IP address, and answer "y" to accept the change. Press enter a couple of times to back up to the main menu, and be sure to log off.

Hello,

I am completely lost with this whole system. The person who installed the system is no longer in our company and I was handed the users manual. I am trying to connec to the system in order to change the IP so we can administer the phone system with the GUI over the LAN. I have connected a laptop to the system directly and also tried to call in with a modem. I am not doing something right because I've wasted a whole afternoon trying to even connect to the system. No Luck. Does anyone know of a site that might have the step by step instructions. The manual isn't very helpful. Or if someone could email me the instructions. jeffreys.boston@avonwalk.org

Thank you for your help,
Jeff

Hi jlsniu,
Connecting to the voice mail is relatively easy. Connect with your computer with the serial port. I use an AT&T adapter (355A), I think there is a wiring diagram for one on this site. Using Hyperterminal, set up for your com port. Set the speed for 19200 baud, 8N1. No flow control. I use ANSI as the terminal emulator.
Connect, hit enter (return) and use "sysadmin" as the user name, use the normal admin password that you use when accessing mailbox 0. You are now in. Follow the directions in the menus. (1,3,1-ip or 3-gateway) I am currently logged into an R6 using this method.
Hope this is helpful,
-Chris

I tried that, adjusting some settings from my previous attempt. I get the Connected and timer in Hyper Terminal but it never asks me for a username or passord. Just a blinking cursor. I hit enter like you said and still nothing. Is there a way to verify that it is getting connectivity through the serial port?

Hi Jeff,
It sounds like your adapter isn't right, almost. I connect to several systems using those settings, so don't change them. Do a search in this forum or email me at bhome@sympatico.ca and I will send you what info I have. Are you using the 355A adapter? Make sure your cable is not a null modem type. You can use a standard CAT-5 patch cord from the adapter to the connector. I use a line cord from an MLS series phone because it's long and very flexible.
-Chris

Here's what I've come up with. I am using the adapter that came with the phone system so I can only assume its the correct one. There is no number on it. Looks like a standard Serial connector on one end, an ethernet looking jack on the other end. I have that plugged into the computer and a CAT5 ethernet cable plugged in. It was plugged directly into the Partner Mail but then I was thinking it might need to be a cross over cable. I don't have one around the office so I have a hub hooked up to do the crossing over for me. I get no lights on the hub though so I'm thinking its not working. If I have the uplink button in on the hub, Hyper Terminal gets really slow. If I have it out for Normal then Hyper Terminal is fast. Either way, I still get just the blinking cursor and can't input anything.
I sent you an email also. Thanks for you help.

Are you connected to the LAN RJ connector or the RS232 connector? The RS232 connector should not be connected to a hub or switch. I played with this RS232 connector for several lost hours until TOUCHTONETOMMY gave me the pinout. My default settings turned out to be 9600 N81. I have one system that I still am unable to connect to but I think because it is an older one that the LAN port is not on it. It is labeled as RS232 but not LAN.

I am connected to the RS232 Connector. I tried everything this weekend. I also only have the RS232 Labled so it might be an old one. Dang that manual telling me I could do it!!! Let me know if you figure it out and I will you but I'm not going to spend a lot of time on it anymore.

Thanks for everyone's help.
Jeff

I did run out and get a Crossover cable and tried to connect it directly to a PC, WINDOWS XP reports Network Cable not attached when I plug it from the LAN connector to the PC. I am going to assume that it does not have a LAN adapter installed and am giving up. Keep me posted if you find a work around SYSTEMKEEPER.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Don't give up, just take a breath.
Firstly, if you have an R1, there is lan connectivity. There are no options or adapters to buy. The crossover cable WILL connect directly to another pc, use a normal cable when connecting through a hub. Point your browser to the ip of the voicemail (I assume you have already done that).
Secondly, I sent you the pinout of the adapter that does work. This is the information that TouchToneTommy posted. You connect with a standard RS-232 cable, to the adapter and using a NORMAL CAT-5 patch cord to the serial port which is marked RS-232 on the voicemail. The RS-232 cable goes from a DB-9 to a DB-25. If the adapter is causing you grief, order the exact part from the vendor who installed the system. Actually, any Avaya dealer would do here.
I don't know if anything there is helpful. Just go over your steps and see where they differ from the posts above. This does work, I do it often at several different sites.
-Chris

The weak link is the DB-9 to DB-25 adapter, in most cases. If you use a "serial mouse adapter", it'll work fine. If you use say, a Cisco terminal adapter, it's not gonna work.

The mouse adapter is found in most CompUSA stores for ~$6. If you need a DB-9 pinout in place of the 355A adapter, I'll include it here:

Can I connect to the unmarked LAN port and use the default IP address in the VM to connect with the AVAYA software?

I am using the RS232 cable that I used to set up another card that had LAN printed on the top RJ connector. It worked OK. The card I am trying to set up now does not have LAN printed on the RJ port above the RS232 RJ port. All I get out the RS232 RJ connector when I punch enter is a few numbers and at this time I cannot recall what they were. Turning power off and back on gives some other letters to. I am going to attach a network checker testset to the unmarked LAN port and see what it says.

Hi systemkeeper,
What type of vm are you connecting too? It sounds like a standard VS series voicemail. They do not have a LAN port. That is new in the R1 and R6.
