Messages stuck in a queue

I have a 2000 Exchange server that is being migrated to Exchange 2003. The 2003 exchange server is running concurrently on a new server.

I have migrated most of the users over and followed all of the steps on performing the migration, from Microsoft and MSExchange.org.

Mail has been working without any problems for the last 6 weeks.

Over the last 2 days mail has been stuck in a queue. The queue is in a ready state but all of the messages are in a queued state.

I need to get those messages out of the queue and into the users mailboxes.

How can I do this? I have tried forcing a connection. I have tried freezing and unfreezing messages.

The 2000 server running exchange was a DC but was demoted and is now a member server in the domain.

I changed the queue settings messages tab. There were limits imposed that I altered and now the messages in the queue were released.

Messages are still queueing up and I am not sure why they are doing this.

Have you changed anything with the DNS configuration?

Is there anything in the Event log?

I ended up powering down the old Exchange server, cleaned up dns, and that seemed to fix most of the problems.

Now onto the next problem...

Bit slow but apparently restarting IIS with the command 'iisreset' at the command prompt clears your message queueing problem and gets them flowing again.

I have *no* idea why these message back up, and if anyone has managed to work out why and how to stop it from happening please tell me. I'm going to try de-muckin the DNS records to see if that helps.

I am not sure on the queue issue. The one thing I have seen is when a queue becomes to large and exceeds the preset connection size for that queue, messeages do not transfer. When the size for connections is adjusted to be larger than the queue size they flow through.

We had Symantec email security for Exchange running. I wonder how many issues that could have caused? I am not sure what cause the pile up of email.

At a previous site there was a DNS issue where smtp mail was essentially being sent back to itself, being the same email server, creating a loop. That issue can be seen in the event viewer.

I didn't plan on learning this much about exchange but hey, it's fun.

We're packing Trend ScanMail for Exchange... hmm. Surely the problem doesn't stem from these pieces of software.

We'll knock off the scanner and see of the problem recurs - and then we'll up-grape the connection size for our queues.

This is happening every other day at the moment so, if it goes away, we should be able to come back with an actualy answer as to why it was happening.
