In my Queue I have 1747 message (and growning) under "Messages Pending Submission" and 58 messages (and growing) under "DSN messages Pending Submission"

When I open Outlook from a client, every looks fine. When anyone send a message to an internal or external recipent it exits Outlook and just gets stuck in Exchange where it just sits there in the Queue.

Every once in a while we will receive email. It is almost like to only sends 5 messages then just stops performing. Then 10 minutes later decides to send 5 more.

There are no errors in the event viewer.

I have set the Diagnostic Logging to Maximum for the following: MSExchangeTransport: Routing Engine/Server, Queuing Engine, SMTP Protocal but nothing out of the ordinaly is coming up.

Any thoughts?

I am also having a similar issue when this "Message Pending Queue" gets out of hand I want to recive some sort of threshold alert, but do not no where to derive this from?

For some reason I let it be over night and it fixed itself. I walked in the next morning and *POOF* everything was good. Who knows what happened...

To monitor the message queues, try going to the monitoring tab of the Server and add SMTP Queue Growth. I haven't tried it myself but that might work.

Thanks MagnumVP,

We current use HP Openview to monitor any alerts and what happen was that in the SMTP related message queue "Message Pending Queue" did not trigger an alert letting us know that it had reached the threshold? I wonder if we first need the montitor ofr the SMTP Queue Growth on before we can get these alerts from the various Queues? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...

I had a similar problem with my exchange, It turns out it was the DNS server on the ISP

The next time that happens, try pinging your ISP's DNS servers. You should be able to find the address in your DNS Forwarders section on the DNS server.

If you see something like the 1st and the 3rd ping but not the 2ns and the 4th. Run it again if the same thing happens again try changing DNS Servers to test and try again. if it pings successfully then contact the ISP.

No It is not manually troubleshooting the problem that is the issue. We run agents on the server from HP OPpenview that has Exchange Aents for 2000, but do not get an alert when the "PreSubmission Queue"(Message Pending) reaches a high level of messages in the Queue. We have SMTP Routing Engine to monitor all items supposedly in the SMTP Virtual Server area, but can not get any alerts?? If we could some how teak Performance Montitor to add the ability to get alerts from this Queue above I would be all set.

Thanks
