Message per day count

I have one Exchange 2003 server. I was asked how many messages are sent/received per day on the server and I realized I did not know exactly..and did not know the best way to get that information. I have a general idea of how the server is handling the loads by watching the queues and server performance etc but not the exact numbers. I would want it broken down between internal only email and with external mailboxes if possible. One of the things I am looking at in the near future is scanning incoming and outgoing email at the gateway so the volume would be helpful. I don't have anything like MOM. What is the best/easiest way? Look at the log files?? Use Performance Counters?
