On a legend 4.2 there are existing buttons on the analog multiline sets that say message lamp. They used to light when they had voicemail and now they dont. Also at the same time their outcalling stopped working. I'm trying to get it back working, but not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

Check that the voicemail ports are rotary enabled - needed only for a Magix Messaging unit - not for Merlin Mail or 007 MLM. Also check/test your TTR's on each 012/016/analog card. What changed from when they were working correctly? Did you add something to the system? You could also go into maintenance and refresh all MWL lights in the system.

Turns out that the message lights and out calling went out at the same time. About 30-35 extensions were effected. It also happened to be after a pretty bad lightning strike. The have the stand alone merlin mail.

Both the message lights and outcalling are controlled by the last port in the Merlin Mail unit. Do a port test on that extension number. Also make sure that nothing has changed in system programming (as a result of lightning) re that port's permissions to do transfers, etc. Make sure that the port is still "unrestricted". I would also check the status and test out the 012 or 016 module that the Merlin Mail is connected to - including TTR's - it may have been damaged if they had no surge protector. You may also need to check out the Merlin Mail unit itself. If it is a 4-port - leave a message for an extension while observing the activity of the last VM port. If the last port does not momentarily turn to "red" shortly after you leave a test message (in order to turn the MWL lamp "on") - then maybe the last port in the voice mail unit was damaged. Check the error log of the processor in maintenance and see if that gives you any additional clues.

How do I do a test on the last port of the merlin mail unit?

The last port on the Merlin Mail unit would be the the relevant extension number for that port on the 012 or 016 card. Go to maintenance, port, station, enter the port number of the last Voice Mail port (count each station (non-line)port starting with 1 from the first module to next to the processor to whereever you have your mail unit plugged in). If you miss count but are close, you can use "next" to move up a port. Choose "status" and under "slot/port" you will see a 4-digit number - which uses the first two digits for the module "slot" and the next two for the "port" of that slot. Make sure you are on the right slot that the mail unit is plugged in to. Once you have the port number you can check the status of the slot or reset it.

I guess I'm confused, it's a stand alone merlin mail. It's not in a slot.

Thanks for working with me on this. It's sometimes tough heading into unfamiliar territory.

The "slot" and the "ports" you need to check are the ones that the Merlin Mail is connected to. It will either be an 012 Basic Telephone module or an 016 T/R module. You also need to check the TTR's on that module - which may have been damaged by lightening.

The Merlin Mail will have connectors going from the voice mail ports on the back of the unit - to the 012 or 016 module that is located in the Legend system. There will be either two, four or six connections - depending on how many ports the voice mail unit has. It is the last connector that controls outcalling and turning on and off the message lights. It is this last connection to the 012 or 016 card that you need to check the status of - as well as the doing a TTR test for the 012 or 016 module. The 012 module has two TTR's, the 016 module has 4 TTR's that need testing. I would also check the processor's error log and observe the "status" of the 012 or 016 card under "maintenance", "system", "status".

Hey tdaugirdas

I gave you a star. Thank you very much. I am using a Merlin Legend R7.0 with a Merlin Messaging R1.

Message lights did not work until I set the ports as RotaryEnable.

I don't suppose you have an expalnation why this worked.

Thanks again.

For whatever reason - Merlin Magix Messaging modules require the voice mail ports to be "rotary enabled" as part of the set-up process. The older Merlin Legend Mail and Merlin Mail were analog vs. digital modules. Maybe - that is why they did not need their ports "rotary enabled". I guess some of the signalling that goes back and forth between the Legend/Magix processor and voice mail unit is still in an analog form - rather than digital. But - this is all only a guess.
