When I open my AutoCAD files from explorer the following message appears:

"Cannot find the file 'e:\tmp.dwg' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available"

And then each file is oppened in a different AutoCAD (one for each file).

I have another computer and this doesn't happen.

What can I do about it?

Does anybody have this kind of problem? It’s really annoying having to close a message of error every time I open an AutoCAD file through the explorer.

And it’s also annoying when in the explorer I open a selected group of files and everyone of them open in a different AutoCAD program, when it was supposed to be all in the same program. Plus the error message appears when every time a file is open (for example, if I decide to open a group of 10 AutoCAD files in the explorer, I have to click “OK” at the error message 10 times, and I will have 10 AutoCAD programs running, everyone with a file open).

Do you have any solution for my problem?

Please help.

Quick tip: tell us which version of ACAD you are working on so we can help you better. I am assuming you are working in ACAD 2k or higher:
Right click the shortcut of ACAD on your desktop, go to the "shortcut" tab, and in the "start in" field enter the drive location you would like ACAD to start in such as "I:\CAD\Templates" or whatever (include quotation marks). After you start ACAD, enter "rememberfolders" and set it to "0". Finally, while you have 1 session of ACAD running, enter "sdi", and make sure it is set to "0". Hope this helps in some way or other.

Hi Flores, thanks for your help.

I'm working on AutoCAD 2002.

I've followed your advice but didn't work.

If I open the files through the AutoCAD, and not from the explorer, I don’t get any error message and all the files are opened in the same AutoCAD program.

But through the explorer it’s different. I get the error and several AutoCAD programs are opened for each file.

Do you have more possible solutions?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I would suggest that it could be Windows related, so the best plan could be to ask the question in the forum that relates to your operating system. Just do a forum search using Windows as the keyword. Pick the forum that relates to the windows version you have and then ask the question again there. You'll stand more of a chance getting an answer there..

Just a suggestion..

Does anyone have an answer for this? I have the same problem too. I am running it from Windows 2000 Advanced Server Edition.

Hi All,

This is an AutoCAD issue, (not really sure it's a bug), but when you double click a file from Explorer and it launches AutoCAD, it can't find any of its support files. The only work around for this is to launch AutoCAD from your desktop icon or program list (start, program files...) and then you should be able to double click from explorer and the file should be opened in your current session of AutoCAD.

Thanks for the help Todd, but that also doesn't work.

It still opens each file in a different AutoCAD. And the error message keeps appearing.

My guess would be it is the OS. You can start AutoCAD form the desktop icon, then browse within Explorer to find your file(s), higlight them, then drag and drop them into the Command Line to open them. You must drop them in the Command Line area to open them, otherwise, they will be inserted as blocks.

This is from the Autodesk Knowledge Base...

Issue

When you double-click a DWG file icon, the following error message is displayed:

Cannot find the file <name> or one of its components. Make
sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are
available.

The only action you can take is to click OK.

Note: After you click OK, the drawing may open normally.
Solution

To open a drawing so that the alert is not displayed, adjust the Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) settings in Folder Options:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the File Types tab.
4. Under Registered File Types, scroll down to DWG, select it, and click Advanced.
5. Double-click Open in the Actions window.
6. Make sure the Use DDE check box is selected, and that the area is active.
7. Ensure the following settings are correct:
DDE Message: open("%1")
Application: acad (for AutoCAD LT, set Application to aclt)
DDE Application Not Running: (field should be empty)
Topic: system

After you ensure that the settings are correct, the file should launch the program without an error message when you double-click it.

Borgunit!

I've given you a STAR!

In my case the problem was the line "Application" in wich I had "program" instead of "acad".

It work perfectly.

Thanks!

J.C.

P.S. - cchen, did it work for you also?
